Role of in-laws:even in this century!!!!!

hi all,
by seeing all the posts here, i feel very sad to see that even in this century, when teh world is moving at such speed, our indian in-laws are still behaving in such indecent manners. i think we girls should not be too straight forward. we sould learn to be diplomatic. though we are educated, earning in lakhs, we dont seem to know how to act as our previous generation used to do. whatever they do to us, hubbies are not going to understand the pain. they may feel sorry, but the sufferer knows the pain. If in-laws are good, its ok. If not we have to fight for ourselves. we need to study their psychology and tackle them in their own way. And as a married woman, one thing I would like to express here is dont ask your parents for help.(see the case of poor hubby in this post). Shrewdness is the only way out.

Though I am still single, but I am very well versed with this problem. I have seen it everywhere around me. I have observed most women can still cope with their in-laws and specifically with their nagging sister-in-law if there husband' s show a little more understanding towards the issue. I have seen men who blame their wives for everything and refuse to accept the fact that a little devil exists in everyone and his family is included in ' everyone' .

Change, compromise and adjustments are always demanded from a women and ironically by a women. Moreover these things are demanded from a daughter-in-law but not a daughter! A daughter can be excused on several occasions but a daughter-in-law cannot be excused, come what may!

And the great India men... they can really never take a stand. In spite of knowing the reality they just don' t want to face it. At the most a husband will keep mum when the wife is being ill-treated but will never retaliate!

At last I would like to quote these lines from a mail that I received a few days ago

\" ....One, who is doing her level best and wants to make this most important,
relationship in her entire life a grand success, if you just help her some
and trust her

One, who just wants one thing from you, as you are the only one she knows in your entire house - your unstinted support, your sensitivities and most importantly - your understanding, or love, if you may call it.

But not many guys understand this.......

Please appreciate \" HER\" ...\"

i so agree with you about how sister in laws can do nothing wrong! ive cared for my partner´ s grandmother and now father for several years. my sister in law does very little to help and yet is still regarded with respect esp from my mother in law. it makes me so angry how she can get away with being so disrespectful and lazy. the notion of a daughter in law treating her in laws as though they are her own parents is ludicrous and even my MIL contradicts this by treating her daughter better than me and totally failing to admit to herself that her daughter is spoilt and lazy. prob cos then she would have to admit that she had made her that way.

Hi Amrita,
I agree to what you say.. being dilomatic and not being straight forward all the time .. but i have experienced this .. its very difficult to implement in real live.. specially when a person like me doesnt want to take nonsense. My mil .. knows how to make an issue over anything. and then the tough perios for me stars. and i am bearing all this .. coz of my 1.3 yrs old son who they take care of when i come to office. Dont know .. how long ! but may be i am losing patience !!

Amrita,I completely agree with your opinion. Its something similar to how we behave at work place. At first we' re good and kind to everybody, but as we realize that some are taking it for granted we tend to change our ways with such people. After all its the question of self-respect wherever or whatever situation we are in.There are always better and decent methods to tackle and take control of the situations we get into.

How to deal with this?
I feel that my husbands parents are using their son. My husband is from India and I am from the USA. He obtained his greencard and citizenship through me after coming here. He is a physician and obtained his residency training. I worked to earn for our family for two years until he got his job. Then he applied for his parents to visit us on a visiting visa. RE:self centered inlaws
I agree they have completely double standards as I recently found out. I saw my husbands childhood photos when he was young. His parents claim they sacrificed everything for their kids and lived poor and behave like martyr parents. Got treated as free domestic servant. But the photos showed them dressed like Bollywood stars with watches and jewellery enjoying their life. O... - Tina [View Message]

RE:Mother-in-law spoiling my child
hello kajal,
if you are rudely talking with her, then this is not way to talking with your mother in law, you tell her in polite way, your son is her grand son, so she never think about his bad effects.... - ruchita [View Message]
RE:Mother-in-law spoiling my child
hello kajal,
stop your negative thinking towards your mother in law, she is your son grand mother too, so if she gave some sweet like sugar to him its just because of her love towards him.... - reshma [View Message]
