Feeding:Travel to India with 7 month old

Hi,

I would be travelling to India during end of Oct. when my son would be 7 months old. It seems like a very tough task to travel alone with the kid! But have to...as my husband cannot come then. Hence, I need some advice on a bunch of things -

1. things to remember during flying (feeding /
diaper changing / special care during take off
/ medicines to make them sleep if any)
2. Feeding in India (do I carry ready Gerber jars
or give him homemade food & what among those)
3. Water in India - do I give him boiled water
only?
4. Are there diapers available in India ? Baroda /
Pune? What brand? and what price?
5. At the airport, if I need to use the bathroom,
are there spacious bathrooms, where I can put
the baby on changing table?

Please reply soon.

You can always check with the airport /airline you are travelling with if the transit airport has enough facilities to accomodate babies. Most do, but some, like Frankfurt, are so cramped that it might be a while before you get your turn. I would seriously recommend that you break your journey for a day so that you and your baby would get enough rest. It is a very taxing thinf to travel with an infant on a 24+ hour trip. So breaking the journey would be good for the both of you.

While in India, I would say you should only be careful with things like raw stuff i.e. unboiled milk etc. Also, give boiled water to your baby. You do not need to carry any Gerber stuff. Remember, your baby is a living being - you only brought it into the world but it is growing on its own. So just be careful with the food but do not be overly worried. You also grew up in India and it is not so bad :-)

I would also recommend using cloth diapers - easier on your baby though a little more work for you. But given that most babies love cloth diapers, I am sure you would be happy as well.

Good luck

Btw, where are you going? Delhi?

Hi,

Thanks for the advice.

Well, I am going to Pune, at my in-laws' place. Thereafter, I shall be going to Baroda, my parents' place.

These days, my son has got so used to going to sleep only if I feed him or give him a pacifier or rock him / swing him :( I've tried putting him to his crib drowsy & let him cry...but doesn't seem to work. His pitch goes higher as time progresses! So, these days, he ends up sleeping with us on the bed & gets up every 3 hours in the night for feeds...Do you have any suggestions on how to teach baby to sleep on hiw own?! Seems like an impossible task now! I know..back in India, babies r used to swinging in their swings (cloth swings) else mom ends up soothing them by feeds or in their laps...When does this habit normally go / how?

About flight travel, I'm booked on Northwest (will go via Detroit & Amsterdam then Mumbai). Cannot make a break journey...have alredi bookeds the tickets now. So, got to do the best I can with the given itenerary!
