Eating Problems:Why does my daughter Chintu overeat?
2001-01-29
Name: Raminder

My daughter has a habit of overeating. She tends to eat almost everything that comes her way. Be it salads, dryfruits, fruits, dal-rice or milk. She is very plump and naturally inactive. Is there any solution?

Maybe your family has a culture of eating. Some families tend to encourage eating as a passtime. And then it becomes too late to wean away the child from the eating/hogging pattern.

Children tend to overeat when they feel insecure or when they do not have anything creative to do. Try and divert attention to a constructive activity like a drawing competition or a crafts class or a sport like swimming.

Quite often eating is an escape route. It helps the child to postpone other activities like studies, sports, tuitions or whatever. So try to reason out the childs psychology.

I feel that you should look inwards to find the answer. If you are subconsciously worried that your daughter will be plump when she grows up, you might be over conscious of each and every thing she pops into her mouth. She might in turn sense this and do exactly what you DONT want her to do. Try and go easy on her for a while. Meanwhile keep a record of what she eats. Is it possible that she snacks so much because meals are not satisfying her or are not interesting enough? Use some interesting recipes to get her interested in wholesome food, and make her eager for mealtimes rather than interested in snacks. Or like another surfer has said -- is snacking a pastime in the family? In which case you have to watch what everybody eats. I have to say that from personal experience sometimes a person who eats a lot is slim and a person who doesnt isnt. Weight/size also depends on genetics. THere are people who are constitutionally fat even though they are average eaters. Good luck.
