Behavioural Problems:My son is very slow!

Hi,

My son is young for the class and he is very very slow in his writing, colouring, painting etc. I always get complaints from his teachers that he is doing everything slow. He is very scared of his school and teachers too I think. He never opens up before them. But at home, it is very difficult to make him stop talking. Because I am a working mother, I had to put him in creche/playhome from the time he was one and half years and I do not know whehther because of that he has got this fear of teachers/school. Otherwise, he is very brilliant, has very good grasping power, very good observation skill etc.
I really want my son to overcome the problem of his slowness and fear of school. But I don't want to stress him too much also. Any suggestions please?

Hi Jaya,

My 4 year old has started going to Jr KG and he hates going to school. It is not the child's fault at all. It is the school's fault. Unfortunately, schools and teachers have a very limited way of looking at education. Like your child my son is also a very bright child. But every time I go to the PTM, the teacher gives me a list of complaints...he does not write, he does not color, he does not recite poems. Unfortunately she does not have the time or the mindset to understand his strengths.

As a parent you know and understand your child. Dont feel pressured by the teacher's limited views. The teacher probably has not taken time to understand your child. Keep encouraging your child and praising him when he does well.

I believe that the love of learning is more important than getting good marks.

So get good books, read to your child, get lots of colors and crayons and clay and let him experiment.
