Feeding:food for 6 month old baby

hi all,
Iam madhu from US, basically from AP,India. I am new to this board.
My babygirl will be 6 months by next week. I want to introduce indian food in my baby's diet.can anyone pl suggest few recipes?what all veggies and fruits can I feed her? I want to prepare them at home.
From 4th month I started giving rice cereal 2tbsp twice a day as per ped advice and also 1 tsp of gerber fruit once a day and she takes 16-18 oz and sometimes 20 oz formula per day.
my baby shows very little interest in drinking formula ,so I want to know if its ok to mix formula(similac) (just powder) to fruit/veggies with little/no water and feed.
thanx in advance,
-madhu

hi all,
thanks alot for ur suggestions...they r really helpful..i started giving her 1 tsp cooked rice and dhal(roasted and ground)with ghee apart from 2-3tbsp rice/oatmeal cereal and 1tspfruit and veggie.
Vatsalya, as u said Iam thinking of giving her marie biscuits soaked in water and ragi extract.
I have one more doubt! do we have to strain the cooked and mashed fruit/veggie before feeding or mashing them is enough?

Hi madhoo,
hope our suggestions go well with ur kid.as michael said babies of 6 months age can't digest lumps in food. so mash the food finely after boiling. then no need to filter.but before feeding be sure that there are no lumps.if i get any more recipies definetly i will post here. kiss ur kid from me.
Love,
vatsalya

Hi madhu,
me too from A.P. (hyderabad) and my son is 5 months old.i give mashed banaana, mashed aloo/carrot for him and giving Marie biscuits thinned with water.try raagi extract also for ur baby. to prepare this boil water add raagi powder(unsweetened).bring it to boil. filter it and feed ur baby. if needed add a pinch of sugar. in the sameway prepare SABOO daana extract (saggu biyyam in Telugu)also. these are healthy for babies.if you want to give Rice with Daal first roast them then powder them. boil these now and feed ur baaby with a little amount of ghee.try it out and let me know. all the best.

1. dont ever add salt to feed
2. you can start on mashed bananas and even apples and sweet limes. Make sure that there are no lumps since babies at 6 months cannot digest lumps.. it will probably pass out.
3. Dont mix powder without adequate water. This could result in lesser hydration leading to hard stools
4. You could also start her on veg soup.. the way to make is to cut the veggies very small.. boil them with sufficient water.. filter with fine mesh.. and feed the liquid. Make sure it is a clear liquid. Start with one veg and every two days add another one based on whether she likes the latest addition.

madhu,

continue giving cereals fruits and veggies till ur baby is 9months. Here, doctors advise to foods other than baby foods, only after 9 months. u can start giving thoor dhal, yogurt, juice, etc now. for dhal, dont add salt. cook it, mash it and feed it. peds advice not to add salt till 1 year ofage.

hope this helps,
love,
jayashree
