Problems in School:how to deal with a moody 8-yr-old?
2004-01-05
Name: plz help

My 8- year-old son is being very careless at school. First it was just with his stationery and books but now he is not even completing his class work. His work is untidy and with loads of spelling mistakes too. Ive spoken to his teacher; she says he is moody. I can get the assignments done but what do I do about class work and assessments

Hi,
everyone is different. parents do get worried when their kids dont do their class work and we tend to scold and yell at them loosing our patience. but as a Mother i too have learnt that if we talk to our kids in a friendly manner they do listen and get more involved in waht we want them to do. take yr kid out to a park or someplace which he likes to visit often. talk to him and try to getout what happens in school. who are his friends and what do they do during class hrs . tell him whats wrong and right. kids dont remember so they have to be told often . read stories at bed time which explains them whats right and wrong and if he has an aim a goal he has to study hard for that and what hes doing wouldnt reach him anyway. pick up such books which will put things into his mind through stories. AS KIDS UNDERSTAND BETTER THAT WAY.

I dont think there is much of a problem with your child. If you can get to do his assignments at home then there must be some other problems at school. He might be having talkative or arrogant company at school. Could be he is distracted by his classmates activities. Also could be if the teacher is too strict then kids dont feel like paying attention to them. In the sense they might (not always) develop hatred or fear towards them. I think you should have a casual talk with your son about the activities that take place in his class everyday. Let him open up. Dont worry he has temporarily lost interest. Also how do you find your child. Why i am asking is, its his teacher who has mentioned that he is moody and not you.

Keep track of his work. Work closely with the teacher to keep track of everyday's work. Make like a rating sheet. Ask her to rate it from 1 thru 5. If he gets a rating under 3 , give him star. Get his favorite toy for every 5 or 10 stars. Try this. It might work.Don't push or criticize him. Constant reinforcement might work. Don't give up.

you need to teach your son the importance of education and you have to make him understand that in todays world he will be left out all alone if he is not well educated. Give him example of some people whom he admires and are well educated. At the same time dont just force him to do things. Talk to him gentelly over a period of time. Whenever you get a time give him examples which boosts his morale to come up in life
