Problems in School:4 year old's glasses elicit insensitive comments
2004-01-06
Name: shital mehta

My four year old wears glasses, mainly to avoid dust as he is allergic to it. While I have no problem with his eye condition as such I am very harried with people's curiosity about the same. Any Tom,Dick and Harry, in the elevator, bus or shops stops me to satisfy his query as to \";how come he has glasses at such a small age.\"; Not satisfied with just that they go on to make nasty comments like, \";oh, he must be watching a lot of TV\"; or \";give him carrots\"; , or even, \";his eyesight must be weak\";! How does one tackle such insensitive behaviour (in front of my child, who is now aware that he is in someway different because he wears them and most others don't. It gets difficult to persuade him to keep them on under such circumstances.)? Any suggestions?

Let your facial expression also not let him down.Everytime someone comments on his glasses just swell up and say\"; Oh,He looks like Harry Potter doesn't he? He looks so good in them,Infact I dont know anyone else whom glasses suit better.\"; In private you can explain casually that glasses will help him see better and it is only a matter of time before he can discontinue its use.

I don't know why sometimes people act in such an insensitive manner. I think it is important that you son does not feel awkward about wearing glasses. One way to deflect conversation is to say - \";Don't you think he looks absolutely wonderful... I certainly think so. I just love him in glasses and you know what glasses are good for him because he can see and read better with them. Did you know that?\";

Hopefully, they will take the hint that you do not want to discuss it further.

I think you might want to say to the people who ask you this question, particularly in front of your son,
