Hello,

i would like to know, how long does a new born baby nurses?
my bay is around 12 days old and he nurses for max 10 to 15 min each time and falls asleep , then he gets up after 1 or 11/2 hour.
is it normal?

Hi Rashmi -

Babies do fall asleep when they are nursing because it is comforting for them. I used to tickle behind my son's ear or at the soles of his feet to get him to start again. With 10 to 15 mins of nursing the baby is getting milk but really little or no fat because that is secreated after about 20 mintues of suckling. Try to get your little one to nurse for at least 30 minutes on one side and if he goes to sleep then just tickle his feet or behind his ears and he will start. They will always fall asleep.

Sometimes they will not let go even when they fall asleep (that was my son), I used to take my pinky and put it in the side of his mouth to put a gap so he can unlatch himself.

Hi mom,
i tried the different ways to wake him up but the problem is he will be so sleepy he leaves the nipple and if i ry to put it back , he won't take it and since he takes less milk each time he gets up for every 1 hr to drink again.i hope this gets improved.
