Hi Sandhya

I have been a silent reader of all your replies and I must tell u that I take all ur words religiously..To begin with my story..it is just usual..pregnancy...delivery..weight
gain and now desperate for weight loss..My baby boy is now 6 months old and Im stuck at 72kgs and my ht is 5' 4' ' .Im in India - Blore and gave up my job for my baby..so Im a stay at home mom currently...Since we have a gym in the apatments that we reside..i dont have to go out..From last week I started visiting gym but was really really confused.Since there' s no instructor to guide me through..i really dont know
how to proceed.I have my brother' s wedding coming up in Feb and I really want to loose atleast 5-6 kgs by then.I leave my kid with my hubby and go to gym..so the time I have with me is around 30-45 mins..but Im ok to exercise everyday in a week..so pls can u suggest me to use the right kind of equipments to burn atleast 200-300 cals per day..I tried using the treadmill..i worked on \" manual mode\" where u have to specify the inclination, speed time etc..
Iam able to walk at a speed of 5 at an inclination of 3.For 30 mins cal burnt is 135..But I read u mention in one of the
replies that we need to keep in mind our target heart rate and work.I tried the \" weight loss program\" but i found my pulse going aound 225(my age is 27).Can u pls suggest a proper procedure that I need to follow for this. Also pls suggest a proper sequence to me maintained while working out in gym (For ex which has to be done first?cycling or treadmill)....

Jaya,
In order to lose weight, we have to burn(or use) more than we consume in a day. On avg a person tends to eat about 2000 cal/day. I probably eat about 2700 to 3000 a day which is another story. Anyway, what i mean to say is if you are burning only 200-300 cal a day, then you will not be losing any weight. 3500 cal equals a pound and 2.2 lbs= 1 kg. So, in order for you to lose 5-6 KGS, you' d have to lose 13.2 lbs. And moreover you are planning to lose the weight during the holidays(when festivals are most)...which will make it extremely difficult on you to resist food all the time.

What i' m really trying to say is keep realistic goals for yourself and try to lose weight slowly than one at a go. The slower you lose weight, the more you' ll stick with the program that got you there.

So, i would say target 3 KGs until FEB which is 6.6 lbs. Target for atleast 2500 cal/week. and if working out for 6 days a week then 410 cal/day.

Treadmills and stair climbers only target certain muscles in your lower body but do not use all the rest of the muscles. But it' s a good start.

The max your heart rate can reach would be (210 minus your age) which in your case would be 183. So, if you are reaching 225 then you are way off. You should immediate stop since this could lead to a stroke. NOT GOOD.

The order of equipment that you need to follow at the gym. Then here' s what i do. I begin with the most difficult one, which i think consumes a lot of my effort. Then i tone it down to the easier ones. For ex) the cross training machines are the hardest for me but they also burn the max calories. So, i begin 1/2 hour on the cross traning, then another 20 on the treadmill, cycling or any other. After this i cool off either by doing yoga, streches or free weights for another 20. I try to do this 5 times a week, but if i skip one of these then no sweat, i take it up the next day.

Free weights, i lift only the 5 to 10 lb ones. My aim is to only tone up my muscles but not to look like a man. But if you think you consume more protein in a day, then go ahead and lift more weights, it will help build muscle.

So, there it is...all the info that you requested. Hope it helps.

As always, remember to practice safety while at your gym. Don' t hurt yourself. Slow and steady is the key. Nobody can become a marathon runner in a day or two. so, don' t aim sooo high. Goo luck.
