Body and Fitness:Q on burning calories
2007-06-08
Name: fat mom again

Its been quite a while now that i am noting how many calories people are burning in each workout.

I am having a feeling that i am burning too less cals as compared to all other people and want to find out why.

Sandya - u hv mentioned using life vesting machines and u burn almost 600 cals in 30 mins. I assumed it may be bec u hv been working out since long. I noticed ppl in my gym - no one runs as slow as i do, my speed seems to be slowest. I can jog for more than a minute continuously. while others in my gym can easily walk at a speed of 6, i just cant. 5.9 speed is what i hv touched max for walking and got exhausted soon.

On the cycle, i am always at the lowest level - easiest one. though my speed is quite fast and i can maintain it for long, i cant pedal at all even when i go one level up.
Others in my gym, even some fat women, cycle at levels 4 or 3 and i just cant go above level 1, my thighs start aching a lot.

on the cross trainer i am better, i can go to level 5 and thats what i hv seen others too.

My highest speed of burning cals has been on treadmill - 100 cals in 15 mins. I have never done better than burning 200 cals in 45 mins of treadmill!

In 2 hrs of gym - i burn 200 on treadmill (45 mins), 100 on cycle (20 mins), 100 on cross trainer (20 mins). Then i do some crunches, yoga, steam.

This is the best schedule. I dont always have all that time.

And now i read about this Ireland lady with 11 m son who burns 300 cal in 45 min.

Where am i doing wrong friends? Why am i not able to do better, its been 2m of gym now?
Its not that i havent improved ... earlier i cd not jog for more than 30 sec, now i jog for 1 min continuously.
But, hello! 1 min???? people laugh at me when i say this.

and then when i calculated that against my calorie intake and my metabolic rate (around 1440), i had to cut on my food intake to make sure i lose.
I started being on liquids all day and only having dinner - 2 times a week.
Result? weakness as expected.
And then once after giving feed to the baby I was so damn hungry, i ate everything that was available in the fridge - including rice and laddoo :(

I want to burn more cals. Is there anything i am not doing right? How come other fat ppl in my gym able to burn more cals than me? (some ladies are as fat as me and with kids).

I asked my instructer. But he is a young bachelor and did not seem to hav any idea about physical issues of a fat mom.

Pls help!

dear patlivated, to me it seems like some kind of mental block that is not letting you do your best. Please don' t take me wrong, but some of the things that you wrote are i don' t know how to say it, but maybe a little weird(sorry for the lack of my vocabulory skills). At 5.9 on the treadmill, you can' t walk...you only run..not jog but run. alright, now at 5.9 you increase your inclination to about say 3.3 - 3.5 and you could burn the same 100 cal in about 10mints when compared to 15. And on the cross training i could easily manage level 15. even when i started off i started at 8..so, i' am guessing that 5 is really low. What happens when you increase the resistance? its ok to go slow but the resistance is where you are using and building your muscles in the right way. so, don' t worry about going slow.

and another thing about getting tired when you try something new. Say you put yourself up for 20 mints on a machine for say at level 8(cross training) and you get really-really tired in say 10 mints. Then what do you do?..here' s what i do. I take a few mintues off, go get a drink of water or sit for about a couple of minutes and take it again exactly where i left off for the rest of the time. I don' t switch to another machine b' cos that makes me feel as if i cannot complete my thing. I hate to give up on anything. I guess what i' am saying is perseverance and determination take you a long way in this battle. Don' t consider yourself weak to someone based on gender or ethnic background or anything else. I agree with you on one thing i.e when i don' t go the gym for say a week, then i can' t get back to where i left it off in a day or two...but i try my best to get there atleast in a week. So, even stopping for a bit to do what you do on a regular basis will take a while for you to get back to that point, remember that. So, when you don' t go to that gym for the weekend or for couple of days then it might take you a day or 2 for you get back there. so, good luck and take care. Have a fantastic workout filled weekend. The weathers definitely getting better out here, so we are planning to go hiking and cycling tomorrow.

hi, i´ am glad that you didn´ t take my writings in the wrong way. I was really getting worried. But, i´ am totally thrilled that you are looking at this with such a positive attitude. You absolutely said it right, if Sandya can do it then so can you. There might be roadblocks along the way, but remember as long as you are sticking to your routine, there is only one way to go in the weight dept, which is to go down and get healthy. And i think taking a multivitamin with extra calcium supplement will really help you maintain your nutrient level along with your body calcium. We women especially are prone to lose calcium after having kids, so its really important to take care of your bones and joints(since you are working out). I suggest that use machines that are easier on your joints(knees). Treadmills and stairclimbers are hard on the knees. You exert a lot of force on your knees while using these machines. That is why if you pursue the cross training equipment, you´ d body will thank you for being so kind to it. Do let me know if you have any other questions. I´ d be more than happy to share what i did.

Thanks sandya.
I dont mind your straight reply, dont worry about it. What you have said is the truth.
I find myself similar to you in many ways except for your determination which i admire. 2 Kids, working, almost same height and almost same weight after delivery. So i tell myself that when sandya can do it why cant i.

Also as u have been thru it, i know i can get my questions answered in the best way. Gym is something i am doing second time in my life, but first time i did it before marriage and I had lost a lot of wt then. Also, i had solid determination at that time, i wonder why i hv become so weak now.
Anyways. About the speed and levels, see u r right. I told u i am at surprisingly low levels and speeds than other people at the gym.

I will try out your idea of taking a break of 1-2 mins when i feel tired.

I had decided to go to 78.0 by this sunday but i am still at same 78.5 kgs.

I shall also try inclination. I had tried it many days back but then i cd not run even for 30 sec so I had gone back to level 0 (i told myself let me build stamina for 5 mins of jog first then i will try inclination). Will try out this too.

One more thing i figured out. I have told u that I have to follow the diet prescribed by my dietician in which i am not supposed to eat a long list of things includes lots of common veggies. And there is no separate cooking for me in the house. So whenever there is a sabji that i not supposed to eat, i go on simply dal and roti.

Eventually, i think i became anaemic.

After i put my question on this baord i discussed same thing with my hubby (he is a long distance, uphill, solid jogger). He asked me to take his multivitamin tablet. And next day i was running with much more energy and stamina on the treadmill and burnt 450 cals (which is a big deal for me as compared to my regular 250-300 cals)!!

So i hv this lesson and i have some great tips from u. Let me go ahead with these.

Hope u dont mind if i come back with more Qs. U hv become my ideal now!
