hi

recently i have been reading a lot about childcare and baby diet and almost all posts on this board..it seems giving formula has become a fashion rather than a necessity..due to increased reading about formula milk..i m getting insecured as i m not giving formula to my daughter..she is on breast milk and semisolids..at 7 months age..m i missing something imp for her ? should i start formula for her..? i have also seens many formula fed infants gaining rapid weight compared to my daughter who was exclusively BF till 5 months of age? what should i do then ? can i start lactogen n all? as such she is active and playful..

If your daughter is BF then that is the best for her. I disagree with your statement about FM being a fashion rather than a necessity. Sometimes, infants don' t thrive or develop well on BM alone, so out of necessity, FM is introduced. My son was in the Neonatal ICU for 4 days after birth during which time, they fed him FM. When he came out he couldn' t latch on properly and eventually we had to combine FM and BM. While he loved BM, he absolutely hated FM. Some babies lap up FM, while some just never like it. So, it' s not mandatory that all FM fed infants gain rapidly.
Some mothers also have to return to work after 3 months, so even if they want, it' s very difficult to exclusively BF an infant unless they carry a breast pump to work and pump every 2 hours, their supply will reduce and FM needs to be introduced for the baby to thrive.
The best situation for you would be to continue BM till age 1 year, then introduce cow' s milk. Keep away from FM if you have the option.

when my baby was 7 months,my doc advised me to introduce her to lactogen as she was on the lower side of the weight,my milk ws not enough for her.But she never took to lactogen,so doc said to give her cow' s milk.SOi strated on cow' s milk.but she hardly took 8 oz of it.but in included it in her diet in somer other ways.BY mixing in cerelac, ragi, oats etc...
