At what age do we need to start brushing teeth for babies and what sort of paste is ideal for them as the babies eat away most of them?

Even before actual brushing with toothbrush and toothpaste I started massaging my babys gums with the tip of my finger without using any toothpaste for about five minutes daily right from the time that she was born. I feared using toothbrush and paste as it could hurt her soft gums. Moreover mothers touch is most soothing and relaxing.
