This is done regularly and recorded by ur pediatrician just like baby's height and weight, just to check the growth of your baby brain (and some thing else which ur doc can tell u). So that if there is any problem which ur kid may not be complaining at present, but may cause problem in future can be found out in its early stages and diagnosed.

Measuring the head circumference is an important part of routine baby check up.It is measured at the largest area of the babys head ;above the eyebrows and ears to the back of the head.
It is measured and compared to previous measurements and the normal range is based on sex ,age,etc

For many years the measurements were taken and analysed which gave way for a standardized chart seperate for boys and girls from birth to 18 months.With the help of these charts ,the paedeatricians compare the measurements during a routine check up and any deviation from normal is checked.
For example,if the measurement is more or if the size is increasing faster than normal,that means there is increase in pressure inside the head.this condition can cause many diseases}.And if the size is too small or if it is growing very slowly,that means that growth of brain is not proper.
The measurement of head circumference is very important as it can help in the early detection and treatment of problems related to brain.
