Trying since long:Metformin??

Hi... There is a cyst in my left ovary. To get rid of this, I was given a Metformin hydrochiloride tablet along with clomofene and follic acid. Am having lot of side effects like vomit, diarrhea because of Metformin.. My doctor definitely wants me to take this and she says it will be alrigh as days go by. Even after a month with all these, its the same. Am so upset because of this. Have any of you taken Metformin tablet? Will it help in conceiving? How did you get rid of these side effects?

Hi I have read thro few research papers on METFORMIN for infertility and PCOD.Reults showed the following benifits,

1.Reduction in Testosterone Level
2.Treating PCOD
3.Normalizing Periods
4.Increase possibility of conceiving
5.Some may need CLOMID with this for quick conceve.
6.Decrease risk of miscarriage

i am using this tab for the past 3 months. Initially it was very difficult and I can understand how you feel. My doctor told me to take 1/2 tab instead of 1 for 3 days and then to take full tab. I felt ok after that.

Hello Doctor, Thanks for your reply. I have cystic follicle which measures 34x27 mm in my left ovary. For what do we take Metformin? My doctor also suggested me to take one per day and increase gradually. But now, not able to bare one tablet also. Will this help in conceiving? Is it a must to take this tablet?

Metformin is used for polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCOS).It is also an drug used in the treatment of adult onset diabetes. In the past every woman with PCOS was put on it. There is a lot of controversy regarding its usefulness at present. As SA has mentioned some women get used to it, hence give yourself some time. However some women remain quite sensitive to the side effects and cannot tolerate it.The drug is not a must and fertility treatment can be undertaken without it.
If you have irregular periods and do not consistently ovulate (and the other tests like scan, hsg and husband´ s semen tests are OK) you might benefit from ovulation induction using clomiphene or gonadotropins.
As far as a simple cyst goes, the best option is to rescan with your next period , they often disappear. It your doctor thinks it is an unruptured follicle she make give you HCG injection to help it rupture and then repeat scan.
In summary, Metformin is not a drug for treating cysts. Tretment of the cyst depends on what type of cyst is present. And that can be decided only by the doctor who scanned you (unless you can email me scan pictures)
Best wishes.

Vomiting and diarrhoea are common side effects of metformin. Take the medication after food to minimize that. In addition , gradually build up the dose. Take one tablet after breakfast and dinner for a week , then one tablet after breakfast and dinner and thereafter one tablet after every meal. There is also a sustained release tablet , ask your doctor.
By the way, metformin or clomiphene are not treament for cysts on the ovary . What kind of cyst do you have?

Thanks so much Dr for your reply. Its six months since I started treatment and have been taking clomophene and folic acid tablets in all the cycles. To take the next scan, my doctor is asking me to wait for some time. God only should help me to get through this wait. Sometimes its really too frustrating when I think of not able to conceive. I have stopped taking Metformin now.

My doctor told me that this tablet will help to reduce my weight. Am not over-weight (My weight is 52 kgs (114.4 lbs) and height is 5" ). I just want to stop this tablet which my doctor never agrees
