Choosing to Adopt a Child

Choosing to Adopt a Child

Adopting a child requires a conscious decision making. It is the cumulative effort of the whole family that welcomes a child into the family. Before choosing a child for adoption all the factors must be considered such as the gender, ethnicity and the age of the child to be adopted. All these factors play an important role in making the child feel comfortable in the family. Adoption is a big decision as it involves emotions. Choosing a child for adoption is the most important aspect of adoption; let us study this in detail.

The moment you begin your search for adoption, there are endless advices from various quarters of known and unknown sources coming your way. Most of the times, the reactions are quite overwhelming and it is important that as adoptive parents you are fully confident about what you are doing. Adoption is a big decision that an individual or a couple take in their lives as they are being legally and morally responsible for an innocent life that they are adopting. After fulfilling the required criteria for adoption, ponder carefully on the ways you choose to adopt a child.

The Infant or the Newborn

If you have never been a parent before, and you are yearning to have a baby in your life, it is more likely that you would choose to adopt an infant. This is for parents who want to feel and experience the joys of parenthood right from the early stages. Adopting an infant can be extremely satisfying for adoptive parents and it comes with its own set of challenges. These are common ones like incessant crying bouts of the baby along with sleeping issues.

But parents are willing to take on these challenges as they wish to naturally bond with an infant than with an older or a conditioned child. Adopting an infant requires the parents to be aware of the natural demands and the normal behavior of the infant during various stages of his growth and thereby prepare themselves to deal with the issues.

The Toddler

Parents choose to adopt a toddler when they wish to experience the fun part of child rearing right from the start. Toddlers are a crazy bunch of energy that can be charming, warm and amusing at the same time. They are a pleasure to watch and deal with and the parents feel that they are transported to their own childhood as they parent an adorable toddler. Parents pressed for time prefer toddlers when they decide to adopt as they have lesser sleeping and eating issues. Since they have already developed a bit of understanding, it is easier to make them feel attached to the family and communication becomes a lot easier.

An Older Child

Adoptive parents also prefer almost grown up children when they want to make the kid aware of the situation in which he is being adopted. They want the child to understand what is going on in his life and are practical in facing the reality. Such adoptive families have a very radical outlook towards life and they want the kid to be the same.

Forming Sibling Group

Families choose to adopt a child when they wish to form a sibling with their other adopted children or even biological children. This is when the parent/s is unable to produce another biological child immediately or just want their kid to have another sibling of the same age.

Wanting a Special Need Child

Parents choose to adopt children with special needs when they want to help such a child get better opportunities in life and grow up in a family environment like any other normal kid. They do it more with a desire to bring them into the mainstream and is usually done more on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.

As you Choose to Adopt, you Need to Know the Following Points:

  • After you decide the type of child you want, decide on the gender and ethnicity too.
  • Remember to do a thorough background check, especially from the family and medical point of view
  • Test out whether the child is a potent match for your family. This can be tested by spending time with the child and allowing him to interact with other members with your family.
