Ram Navami is the day when birth of Lord Ram is celebrated. He is considered ideal man and is remembered and adored on this day.

Ram Navami, one of the most important festivals of India, is the day when seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Lord Ram was born on earth. He is believed to have half of the divine characteristics of Lord Vishnu. His name means one who is blissful, gives joys to others and he taught humans how to live lives in accordance of dharma and divine principles.

Significance of Celebrating Ram Navami

People celebrate the birth of Lord Ram so that they ask themselves whether the birth of Ram like character has taken birth within themselves or not. Once people literally try being like Ram, there will be establishment of Satyug once again.

The purpose of Lord Ram’s birth was to destroy Ravana, the evil. Every person is believed to have characteristics of Ram and Ravana inside him. So, if by celebrating Ram Navami, everyone takes the oath of killing the evilness of Ravana inside them, they can become a good human being and live a life of contentment and success.

People pray to the sun in the morning so that they can seek blessings from the supreme power listening to religious books especially Ramayana, make people aware of the difference between right and wrong.

Why Do People Keep Fast on Ram Navami?

Followers and devotees of Lord Ram keep fast during the day. Their main aim is to purify their body and heart. They break their fast in the evening with fruits and sweets. This provides them concentration and feeling of wholesomeness.

Ramlila Plays on Ram Navami

The celebration of Ram Navami commemorates different events of Ram’s life. The dramatic performance of the entire life of Lord Ram on earth is known as Ramlila. In fact, Ramlila not only gives people a glimpse of Ram’s life, but also helps them observe the perfect amalgamation of several qualities in the character of Lord Ram. He is portrayed as an ideal son, an ideal step-son, loving brother, a caring husband and a responsible king.

Ramlila makes people aware regarding their duty of protecting their family from danger and instil in themselves the potentials of sacrifice and honesty.

Importance of Chariot Pageant on Ram Navami

It is an indispensable part of Ram Navami that devotees take out chariot procession on streets. They place images of Lord Ram, Sita and Laxman on the chariot and take the procession out on the streets. In some places, actors in the disguise of Ram, Sita and Laxman are positioned on chariot and the convoy is taken out. By taking out the procession people want to show and pray that Ram’s reign is back.

Ram Navami in South India

In southern part of India, Ram Navami is celebrated as the marriage anniversary of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. By rejoicing this way, people intend to celebrate the loving bondage of husband and wife.

Hindus consider Ram as God and worship him mainly because of his divine characters. Even when incarnated into human, Ram did not compromise with the righteousness and completed all the duties of life successfully. He had to face many practical problems during his life span on earth, but Lord Ram never complained. People celebrate Ram Navami to eradicate negativity from earth and from the minds of humans. Devotees seek blessings from Lord Ram so that they can become like him and eliminate all signs of evil at least from themselves.
