For parents, raising happy,well-nourished children can be a challenging task, especially in today’s world. Therefore, it is important for them to focus on the healthier aspects of life and encourage their children to do the same. The chief thing to keep in mind is that, you should practise what you preach.
If you believe and follow a healthy lifestyle yourself, it would be more effective on your children than simply telling them what to do. For helping your child having healthy body and mind, you should focus not just on your child’s physical needs but on their spiritual and emotional needs as well. Read below on how to make the most of your day.
1. A Wholesome and Balanced Diet
It is essential that you fill your children’s plate with all the nutrients they need, but make them understand why each nutrient is important for their body. Have them describe their feelings after they have different types of food, and when they are full. When they complain of hunger at odd hours, help them process the difference between eating to gain energy and eating simply to pass time. Never relate food to a last option in moments of boredom, loneliness or sadness, and do not offer sweets as a reward.
2. Sports or an After-School Activity
If your child gets bored easily after coming back from school, sign her up for a sport she would enjoy. Otherwise, send her out to play with friends for fresh air and exercise. Team sports help in building friendships, taking care of their health, teamwork and learning leadership skills.
Playing with friends can help her in problem solving, self-control, and in making friends. However, if she is not really into sports, she can join after-school institutions where she could enjoy painting, dance or writing classes. These activities will help her occupy time as well as develop an interest in art.
3. Family Time
Sometimes, family time can be made really simple. Instead of going to a movie and having popcorn, go to a park or visit a museum instead. If you’re really adventurous, you could go on hiking or trekking as well. Exercise at home can also be a fun activity by playing some good music, while will teach children about the utilisation of energy in our body, reducing stress and revitalisation of our body and mind.
4. Yoga and Relaxation Time
Yoga is an excellent exercise for your child and she will benefit greatly from it. Meditation should also be practised at a quiet place, preferably in the morning, when your child can tell you about what sounds she can hear when focussing on her breathing. Make her take deep breaths when she is stressed or in pain. Relaxation time is equally important for your child, so put away all gadgets and put on some relaxing music to calm your minds. This would also be very good to ensure a good night’s sleep and develop a healthy mind-body connection.
5. Healthy Communication
First of all, give unconditional love to your child. Help her develop her sense of self-esteem and confidence by encouraging her to make her own decisions. Talking to your child about her day will also help in developing a loving relationship and avoiding stress. Encourage her to develop a positive body image and avoid discussing your own body issues with her. Tell her about the benefits of laughter and a good spirit. Having a positive image of herself will automatically make her a happier person, thus developing a healthy body-mind connection.
As parents, you should be an example for your child’s healthy body-mind development. Following the aforementioned guidelines will not only help you in living a life of discipline but will inspire in your child the same sense of developing a healthy mind and body.
