Preparing Children to Succeed in School, College and Beyond

Preparing Children to Succeed in School, College and Beyond
Raising a child who has an ability to be successful in every sphere of life is a dream of every parent. Let us take a look at few steps parents can take to help children succeed in school, college and beyond.

Most parents spend all their time and energy in honing the academic performance of kids believing marks and grades to be the only indicator of success. However, the truth is that children require a lot more than just marks to succeed in school, college and professional life. Kids require very specific skill sets to succeed and it is up to the parents to infuse these skills in them from childhood.

Collaborative Skills

One skill that your kids are going to need in large quantities is collaborative skills as they will need to collaborate with peers in high school, college and beyond. The better they are able to collaborate and coordinate the better will their performance be as a team player. And is certainly no secret as to how critically important team work is in achieving success in every sphere of life. Students in high school, college and universities often need to work on projects so it is better to prepare kids mentally from childhood.

Communicative Skill Development

Be it in academics or in the social or professional sphere children need effective communication skills to succeed. Many employers complain that their employees are unable to carry forward a decent conversation or fail in making their point effectively. Active listening and maintenance of eye contact are the first two things that should be taught to children. Monitor the development of verbal and written communication skills of your children from an early stage as this is how you can prepare them for success.

Inculcating Reading Habit

If there is one habit that dramatically alter the EQ and IQ levels of your child and set him or her up for success both in the professional and personal success, it is the habit of reading good books. Several scientific trials and experiments have conclusively established that children who have the habit of reading books outside their academic curriculum have a better vocabulary, are brighter and have enhanced comprehension and expression skills. Read to your kid from early childhood so that he or she picks up the habit naturally.

Effective Management of Time

The older you child grows the more unstructured life becomes. At home and in school there is a curriculum regulating the day and kids are given fixed time slots to finish certain tasks. However, life in college and beyond college demands organic time management skills. How effectively your child manages time will directly reflect in the chances of success.
One good way you can ensure that time management is perfect is by teaching this skill early in life. Give your kid a cluster of tasks and a chunk of time in which to finish them. Now ask him or her to prioritize and accomplish those tasks in the order of importance. Step in if required with advice and intervention but let your kid do most of the thinking. Effective time management is one of the biggest indicators of future success both in professional and personal sphere.

The Joy of Learning

In this highly competitive world it is very easy to get caught up in the rat race of tests, examinations etc. However, sometimes the pressure of numbers eradicates the organic joy that a child should derive from learning something new. Whether it is writing a new essay or solving a Math problem or picking up a new sport; your child should know how to enjoy the pleasure that comes with these new acts. Teach your children that while numbers are important what would really help them in the long run is the pursuit of knowledge.
When you follow these simple tips you will definitely b successful in encouraging your child walk the path of success in school, college and beyond it.
