Contraceptives and Conception

Are you worried about side effects of contraceptives? Do you think they shall interfere with your ability to conceive, when you plan to become a mom? Well, here we have shared all important information about contraceptives and pregnancy that you must be looking for. Read along to have a better idea.

Oral contraceptives are commonly known to protect you against unwanted pregnancies. An unplanned pregnancy can indeed become a reason for huge stress and create financial instabilities in some cases as well. You can avoid such circumstances by discussing about different contraception options with your doctor.

If you are concerned about how the contraceptive pills affect your fertility and if you would be able to conceive again when you want to become a mother, you can discuss them with your doctor.

Contraceptives and Your Body

Your body may miss a menstrual cycle when you stop the pill. Your ovaries are said to take time to wake up again. The pill acts by stopping you from ovulating. If you had been taking the pill for quite some time, give yourself some time to get back to the normal routine before you try to conceive.

Traditionally, it is believed that you should take around 3 months to be able to get pregnant again after stopping the pills. You need not worry about your chances of conceiving, even when your menstrual cycles are irregular.

Misconceptions about Contraceptives and Pregnancy

There is a commonly associated myth that contraceptive pills interfere with your ability to get pregnant.

With advancement in the field of medical science, the oral contraceptives manufactured today are far different from those available previously. The contraceptives are available in low doses that ensure you do not suffer from any reproductive problems. The medicines do not interfere with your fertility as well.

Irregular periods are the only issue that you can encounter when you stop taking pills after a long period. Your body at this time is readjusting and your hormone levels are getting back to normal to begin your menstrual cycle.

In case you are worried, you can buy an ovulation kit that shall help you know when you ovulate. This way you can know if your body is ready for pregnancy.

Getting Pregnant After Stopping the Contraceptives

You need to be aware of the fact that you are not compelled to wait to get pregnant after stopping your pills. If you are taking some time to conceive, it simply means your body needs some little more time.

This should be taken as a transition period that will help you return to the normal functioning. Your reproductive system had to bear some external influences and thus you should give it some time to produce normal levels of hormone.

In case you want to be sure, you can change the form of contraceptive you use. Condom is considered the safest and the best option in this case.

You need not worry about effects of the contraceptives on your unborn child. It shall not interfere with your healthy pregnancy as well.

How to Choose a Contraception Option?

Keep in mind the following while choosing a contraception option.

  • Is it effective?
  • What are your plans for pregnancies in the future?
  • Are you breastfeeding presently?
  • What is your physical condition? Are you on medication?
  • What are the risk factors and side effects, if any of the contraceptive method you choose?

There are permanent, long acting and short acting contraceptive method available. If you are planning a baby soon, you need to choose the short acting one.
