Unplanned Pregnancy Causes

An unplanned pregnancy may put even married couples in hurdles. There is a continuous increase in the rate of cases of unplanned pregnancies. It is one of the major issues faced by couples all over the world. There are different causes of unplanned pregnancy. Read on to know in detail about the causes of unplanned pregnancies.

For any woman a positive pregnancy test will either bring a big smile on her face or an unwelcome look depending upon whether the conception was planned or not. Women getting pregnant unknowingly without planning for it normally regret this outcome if they are not quite ready to take the responsibility of having a child. Majority of such women opt for an abortion to get rid of the unborn fetus. Despite the development of contraception, unplanned pregnancy is one of the most common issues faced by women worldwide.

Reasons for Increase in Unplanned Pregnancies

What is the reason for an increase in the rate of unplanned pregnancies despite contraception methods?

Researchers have pointed out one single cause responsible for increase in unplanned pregnancies these days- increased sex! Despite advanced contraception techniques, better knowledge on reproduction, better sex education services, woman are today more prone to the risk of an unplanned pregnancy than those a few generations ago. During the good old days women avoided sex in the constant fear of getting pregnant as a result of which there were less number of cases of unplanned pregnancies.

Causes of Unplanned Pregnancies

Here are some of the common causes of an unplanned pregnancy?

1. Contraceptive Failure

Contraceptive failure is one of the causes of an unplanned pregnancy. Statistically almost 53% of unplanned pregnancies occur in women who make use of contraceptives. And contraceptive failure is common in women of all age groups not necessarily teenagers and young women. This may happen because of the following factors:

Improper Use of Contraceptives
- Not following instructions given for using a particular method of birth control correctly is one of the important causes of an unplanned pregnancy. For example, while making use of birth control pills, it is important to take the pill exactly at the same time every single day to enhance the chances of avoiding pregnancy.

While making use of condoms as a contraceptive, it is essential to make sure that it is used properly and in good condition. Women who use a diaphragm or cervical cap must ensure that the cervix is completely covered before having sexual intercourse. Similarly IUD users need to check that the device is in place monthly. Failure to follow these simple rules applicable for each type of contraception may result in an unwanted pregnancy.

Inconsistent Use of Contraceptives
- Inconsistent use of contraceptives may also cause contraceptive failure. For example forgetting to take one birth control pill significantly raises the risk of conception. Barrier methods of contraception like condoms, cervical caps, and diaphragms must be used during each and every act of sexual intercourse; forgetting it even one time can result in pregnancy.

Improper Calculation of Fertile Period
- Making wrong calculations about the fertile period is a huge mistake which many couples make leading to an unplanned pregnancy. Although the chances of conception are the highest during the fertile period of a woman’s cycle there is no guaranteed "safe time" of the month. Pregnancy may occur on almost any day of the month including during menstruation.

2. Non Availability of Emergency Contraceptive Pill

Emergency contraceptive pill is a wonder pill which ensures that conception does not happen despite engaging in unprotected sex during the fertile period provided it is taken within a certain number of hours after intercourse. Many women have unprotected sex under the impression that they can take this drug afterwards to avoid getting pregnant. However, this pill is not available easily without prescription in a number of countries. In cases where the women are unable to obtain a doctor’s prescription within the stipulated time there are chances of an unplanned conception happening.

3. Lack of Knowledge on Sexual Health

Lastly lack of knowledge on sexual and reproductive health is another contributing factor for an unplanned pregnancy. During a relationship or when planning for marriage couples must get themselves educated about the functions of the sexual & reproductive health systems. This will give them a clear understanding of what will happen during sexual activity; how pregnancy occurs and be prepare to have a baby.
