Arjun Kshettry: 6 year old Golf Super-Achiever

Arjun Kshettry is all of 6 and already a Golf super-achiever! How did he accomplish so much at such a young age? What drives him to excel in every tournament? How does he deal with competition and nervousness? To learn all about his achievements, his determination, his inspiration, and so forth, read on.

Arjun Yuvraj Bhupen Kshettry, a 6 year old Golfer, is a living breathing example of how parents can encourage their children to be super-achievers in extracurricular activities without letting their schoolwork suffer. Arjun has a number of unique feathers in his little cap. His perseverance and ambition for Golf has been recognized and awarded when he played his first ever Golf tournament at the young age of 5! He has won many golfing tournaments such as the Champions Junior Golf Tour and the Punjab Challenge. He is also the only child of his age from India to qualify in what is considered the Junior Olympics of Golf held in Los Angeles.

Arjun’s love affair with Golf

The love for golf runs in Arjun’s genes. Both his father Rishi, and his late grandfather Dadu, were avid golfers. Dadu taught his son Rishi all he knows about golfing, and Rishi, in turn, began developing Arjun’s love of golf since he was a baby. Because Arjun hero-worships professional adult golfers, his paternal grandmother customised his t-shirts, caps and golfing gear with the letter ‘A’ for Arjun on them which he dons with pride.

Parental Motivation

When Arjun was just a few months old, his father, Rishi, bought him a colourful toy golf set which was his constant companion since he was old enough to stand by himself. Arjun was gifted his first real golf set by his parents at the tender age of 2, and has accompanied his father to the golf course to learn the game since then. The main driving force in his life has been his father Rishi, who has been constantly guiding him through the various stages, from learning to love the game to learning how to play the game. His mother, on the other hand, is the balancing force in his life who has taught him to multitask, ensuring that neither his school work, nor his favourite hobby suffers because of his busy schedule.

Formal Coaching

After being informally coached by his father, Arjun enrolled in a golf camp organised by the Butch Harmon School of Golf in Pune, the same golf school that coached Tiger Woods. In March 2013, Arjun was selected to participate in the Gladrags Little Miss and Master contest where he was personally trained in personality and etiquette by Maureen Wadia at the Gladrags Academy in Mumbai. Currently, Arjun trains at the Golf Academy at the Oxford Gold and Country Club in Pune.

Golf Tournaments

  • At the age of 5, Arjun played his first tournament, the Champion’s Tour, in March 2012 at Delhi.

  • In May of the same year, Arjun participated in a Golf Tournament in Jamshedpur where he was the youngest player in the Junior Boy’s category. His young age and inexperience did nothing to dim his determination to complete the 9 holes, where his caddy and a few fellow players carried him in between shots as he was too tired to walk! His perseverance even earned him a special prize from the organizers.

  • He has won the Champions Junior Golf Tour and the Punjab Challenge Tournament among many others.

  • He has participated in a number of Golf Tournaments in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, and Chandigarh.

  • Arjun recently won the Bronze medal in the international Veritas World Juniors Golf Tournament which is considered the junior Olympics of Golf. The tournament, held in Los Angeles, had children aged from 5 to 18 participating, from across the world and Arjun was the only child to qualify in the 6 year category of the tournament from India.

Balancing School and Golf

This little 6 year old golfer’s schedule would put a businessman’s schedule to shame! Participating in tournaments with regularity has provided him with the opportunity to visit many new places in India and abroad. His mother tries to balance his school and studies along with golfing and other activities. She says that while it is tough at times, “Arjun has this great quality of being able to focus on things that he likes to do and golf is one of them.”

Arjun has a healthy balanced diet and drinks plenty of water as advised by the Champion’s tour organisers. His day begins at 5 in the morning where he trains for an hour before going to school. After coming home by 3.30 in the afternoon, he first finishes his school homework and then goes for a 3 km run in the evening.

To help Arjun get over any nervousness and insecurities, his maternal grandmother taught him the power of positive thinking. When he was extremely nervous on his trip to Los Angeles for a tournament, he spent the whole flight writing positive, confidence inspiring messages in his diary, as taught by his grandmother: I CAN DO IT and I WILL DO IT.

What inspires you the most about Arjun Kshettry? Is your child a super-achiever? How does your child balance school and his favourite hobbies? Discuss here.
