Guava is a tropical fruit which is similar to a pear in shape. Its color is a shade of green which changes over to yellow as the fruit ripens. It has pink or white flesh with small seeds. The whole of the guava fruit along with the seeds and the rind is edible.

The guava fruit is rich in Vitamin C. As compared to citrus fruits such as the orange, the vitamin c content in guava and its rind is almost five times greater. It is a fruit with an unusual combination of nutrients- calcium and Vitamin C. It also contains Vitamin A and B, as well as iron, folate, and fibre.

Healing Properties of Guava

In addition to its rich nutritional value Guava is beneficial for lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. It basically helps in protecting the heart from the buildup of fatty deposits which is the main cause of heart attacks. Eating guavas improves the blood circulation in the body and hence is very useful for strengthening the heart. Related health benefits of eating guavas include:

  • Preventing as well as treating scurvy.
  • Treatment of asthma, acidosis, congestion of the lungs.
  • Treatment of excessive bleeding and prolonged menstruation.
  • Being low in calories, high in fibre and water content it makes a healthy snack and can easily be included in the diet of weight watchers.

How to Eat Guava?

To ensure that your body benefits from all the nutritive properties of guava it is essential to eat the whole fruit. The rind of a guava is rich in Vitamin C and fibre. The fibre present in it is useful to flush out harmful toxins from the body and prevent constipation. When choosing guavas, go for fully ripe ones that have soft pink flesh which is easy to chew and eat. You can check out if the fruit is ripe or not by gently squeezing it.

Specific Uses of Guava

Let us have a quick look at the specific uses of guava fruit.

Treating Excessive Vaginal Discharge -

Women experiencing excessive vaginal discharge can make use of guava leaves decoction. The boiled extract of guava leaves can be used to wash or rinse off the private parts.

Treating Diarrheoa -

To get relief from diarrheoa it is useful to consume a decoction made by boiling guava leaves and rock salt. The extract of guava leaves is also a very effective disinfectant and beneficial for healing wounds.

Treating Skin Problems -

Guavas are very useful to improve the skin texture and avoid skin problems. Due to presence of astringents in this fruit and its leaves it is effective for skin care. Skin benefits can be derived by either eating the fruit raw or washing the skin with the decoction made of its immature leaves and fruits. It is effective in tightening facial muscles and loosened skin. Guava is also rich in vitamin - A, B, C and potassium which are excellent anti oxidants and effective in detoxification. It helps to keep the skin glowing and free from aging and wrinkles.

I like guavas but I do not like its seeds. Do the seeds have any health benefits or can I spit it out while eating guavas?

Guavas can cure constipation also. Ripe guavas help to cure constipation. Too much of ripe guavas can lead to diarrhoea.
