Dealing with Complaining Grandchildren

Why do grandchildren constantly complain to their grandparents? How can grandparents deal with whining grandchildren? What is the best strategy for dealing with complaining grandchildren?

Just like some adults, children are also governed by moods. There are some who are more inclined to fall into negative mood swings where they end up whining and complaining all the while. It is true that they are difficult to deal with as nothing seems to satisfy them. Usually, kids feel more at ease with their grandparents as they have a preconceived notion that grandparents are supposed to love and pamper them mad. So most of the times, it is found that such kids complain more when they are staying with their grandparents than when they are staying with their parents. This is because they have already realised that parents will not indulge them to that extent and they might be punished or reprimanded for their behaviour.

So as grandparents you need to have a clear strategy that will help you deal with such whining grandchildren.

Know the Cause First

First of all you need to know the real reason for the negative attitude. Very often it is found that there is some sort of physical discomfort in the child that is resulting in this behaviour. So first you need to observe. You might notice that when the child is hungry or tired or feeling sleepy he or she is complaining about everything that is happening around him. There can also be a medical problem for which you can seek the suggestion of a doctor. As soon as you get to know the root cause you can take steps to alleviate them. But then, there are also a lot of instances where the kid is complaining for no apparent reason. It is just a matter of attitude and it is the most difficult to deal with such cases. Here all you need is to be patient and tricky while dealing with your grandchild.

Ignore and Watch

This is a strategy that is often found to work with children who are constantly complaining. If your grandchild has adopted such a behaviour, you can experiment this strategy for a few days. Just ignore the persistent complaints from the kid. When they run up to you and complain that they are bored, simply tell them that it is alright if they are feeling bored, now it is their responsibility to find something or engage in some other activity that will make them feel interested.

Do Not Attend Them All the Time

Make it clear to them that it is not your duty to attend them all the time. It has been often found that this strategy works wonders. But you need to be strict with your attitude, it should not be something that you do it one day and the next day you give in to the whims of your grandchild out of affection. Here you also need to understand that you are not being rude to your grandchild, but are actually helping him to come out of a behavioural problem that can grow to something big in future.

As grandparents you already have this experience that when you engage in a behaviour for too long, it will grow and this is a norm. So you must do your utmost to stop this behavior from continuing. So you will observe that when you argue, remind, reprimand, correct, lecture or ignore, it will surely go away after a while.
