Problems related to Breastfeeding

There may be some problems associated with breastfeeding like breast infection, sore nipples, breast engorgement etc. These problems can be easily rectified by simple steps. Know how to sort out some common breastfeeding problems.

Every mother faces some breastfeeding problem or the other. Breastfeeding problems are common and they can be resolved by following simple home remedies. Also, if certain precautions are taken, breastfeeding problems can be avoided. Let us take a look at some of the common breastfeeding problems faced by mothers and tips for dealing with them.

I have a breast infection, what should I do?

Even if you develop a breast infection, there is no harm in continuing to let your baby suckle at that breast. It is safe to continue breastfeeding. If you are not comfortable doing that, you should continue expressing milk from that side. Adequate rest and hot water fomentation is helpful. Antibiotics may be necessary. If an abscess forms, incision and drainage may have to be done. However, you should commence breastfeeding for the infected breast as soon as possible. This will not affect the healing process.

What to do about breast engorgement?

Breast engorgement can be alleviated by feeding your baby frequently, whenever she demands it. Some mothers' breasts become congested 3 to 4 days after delivery. They should be made to remove the milk as soon as they feel congested. If the baby is separated from the mother for some reason (due to illness or surgery), the mother should express her breasts to maintain her milk supply and prevent engorgement of the breasts.

How do I treat cracked or sore nipples?

This usually occurs if the baby is not positioned correctly during breastfeeding. The first thing to do is to rectify this. You must continue to breastfeed your baby. You should expose your nipples to the air (and sun if possible) and apply a drop of hindmilk to the cracked nipple. No ointments or creams should be applied. While a daily bath is all right, soap is not good for the nipples. It is not necessary to clean the breast before and after every feed. If the baby has oral thrush, apply gentian violet to the baby's mouth and your nipples thrice a day till the thrush clears up.

I can notice a tender area in my breast?

The tender spot in the breast may be caused due to plugged duct. This tenderness in breast can be eased with the help of massage while you are nursing your baby and by applying a warm compress. It is necessary to make sure that you empty your breast every time they are full by breastfeeding the baby to deal with problems like tenderness in breast.

How to avoid breastfeeding problems?

Breastfeeding problems can be avoided if babies are breastfed the right way. Firstly, you must learn to position your baby correctly when you are breastfeeding her. If the baby is not able to suck the milk from properly, many problems can arise. If baby is comfortable while you are nursing her, she can suck the milk properly and your breasts will be emptied by her properly thereby preventing problems like breast engorgement.
Do not let your baby sleep with your nipple in her mouth. Avoid skipping breastfeeding, breastfeed as much as you can as skipping breastfeeding can cause problems like tenderness in breast or blocked ducts. If your breasts are leaking, use breast pads so that the problems like sore nipples do not get worsen. If you are producing excessive milk, you can always express the additional accumulated milk after you finish breastfeeding your baby in order to prevent problems like hardening of breast due to accumulation of milk.
Eat a well balanced and healthy diet so that it can aid your breastmilk production. If you are concerned with your breastfeeding problems and if you are unable to resolve them with home remedies, you must consult a doctor so that he or she can suggest appropriate measures.
