Why do Mums Give-up Baby for Adoption

The process of adoption for a mother is a unique experience as a mother is closest to the child. A mother who likes her child to be adopted must have some strong reasons for it. There are a number of factors that may be responsible for a mother to let her child for adoption. This adoption process is an emotional experience and should be taken after great deal of thinking. Once the child is adopted, the biological mother has to relinquish all her rights. Here are some factors leading to adoption.

The process of adoption requires the participation of both the biological and the adoptive parents. Perhaps it is more complicated and difficult for the mum who is considering adoption. There can be a wide array of reasons on why the mother would like to give up her child for adoption. It has been observed that this decision mostly comes in from the necessity of family preservation. The factors that lead to such a situation can be as varied and endless but the fact that the mother is willing to give up the custody of her child both socially and legally, is indeed a difficult decision.

Here is a Limited Overview of Situations that Lead Mothers to get her Child Adopted and the Factors that she Should Keep in Mind.

Single Mother

Single parenthood is neither bad nor immoral. The mother may not be able or want to keep the child depending on the manner in which it is handled in her family and society. Here it is a traumatic decision to separate, and the mother needs to understand that giving up her baby for adoption is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. The decision making becomes easier when the mother ponders on the time limitations of the problems she is facing and be far-sighted enough to realize which of them will go away sooner or later and which of them are here to stay. Accordingly she prepares herself mentally and goes ahead with the adoption.

Impossible to Keep the Child

This often happens to single parents who are unwed or divorced. Mums who have absolutely no means to keep and raise the child, giving up for adoption are the only solution for them. They need not feel guilty for relinquishing the child but rather view it in this way like; they are allowing the child an opportunity to lead a better life, something that she cannot promise.

Wanting to Help Someone’s Childlessness

While carrying a child or even before becoming pregnant, the woman might feel inclined to help bring in some joy to a childless woman or couple. This emotion alone leads her to give up her child for adoption right after birth. This is an extremely difficult decision as the mother is gifting her child only for the sake of some one else’s happiness or wish fulfillment. She might often end up countering and deviating from her own decision during the later stages of pregnancy when the mother bonds best with the unborn life or after delivery. Then it is a hard emotional decision on whether to abide by her promise or keep the child. So such a decision calls for serious consideration and mental clarity.

Final Word

It is important that mothers take decisions regarding giving up for adoption after a lot of thought. Societies across the world openly applaud the woman who is adopting while at the same time, the biological mother is looked down upon. So it is vital for her to have a good family support for her decision and she must also opt for counseling sessions.

This is highly advisable as pregnancy, giving birth and adoption are strong emotional decisions and mothers do need a reliable support group. Once she has taken the adoption decision, she should get in touch with a post-adoption support group to cope with the situation.

These groups not only help her to weigh the different aspects of her decisions but also help her consider aspects that she might have overlooked.

The other best part is that they allow the interaction of the biological mother with the adoptive mother. This process mentally assures her that her child will grow up in safe hands and prepares her for the adoption process.

As long as adoption is done with a good positive cause on both ends its a blessing. There are cases where young moms and willingly giving up their baby for a better life to childless couples and other where birth moms want to move forward for any reason and opt for adoption. My husband and me are waiting since 5 years to adopt a baby and with the tight adoption rules and many children left astray in India its hard to believe why the govt is not open for deserving parents.

it is very disgusting when mothers give their babies up for adoption. If they cannot take care of the baby, then they should not give birth. They have no right to bring a baby into this world, if they cannot afford to take his care. Women who are victims of rape and incest are a different case altogether
