Adoption, Where do I start?

Adoption is unique experience; it means giving love and affection to someone else’s child who is adopted. To protect and safeguard the interests of the adopted child the procedure of adoption is a tedious one. Adoption process is a legal process and it takes into account many factors before signing of the adoption decree. Learn more about the basics of adoption process.

Adoption is a very exciting thing to happen to the adoptive parents as they are able to have a new member in their family whom they can love and adore with all their heart. It indeed marks as a wonderful experience in their life. But often the adoption process comes across as an overwhelming process that is highly complicated, requires a lot of time for the legal formalities to take place and end and even frustrating due to all these factors. These are the emotions experienced by parents who eager to get the child as their own.

But in order to evade such situations, it requires a great deal of understanding of the adoption process.

Once the adoptive parents obtain all the details of this process, they will understand that the process requires certain formalities and every thing is done to ensure a proper and safe future for the adopted child. A thorough back ground research is essential to initiate and complete the adoption process without any hassle.

Adoption can happen with newborns, minors to teenagers. Children belonging to every race and ethnicity or residing in any country can be adopted. So a well informed background research along with the rules of the land is essential. There are also parents who seek to adopt children with special needs. According to the welfare act of the respective country, the costs and waiting period varies along with the type of adoption.

So What are the Options to Initiate Adoption?

  • Adoption through agencies which is permissible in most of the countries
  • Take the help of the local public agencies
  • Obtain services from the licensed private agencies which cater to both the domestic and inter-country adoptions
  • The independent agencies
  • Identified adoption options
  • Seek services of legal intermediaries or attorneys who work under the law of the respective land
  • Seek the help of adoption facilitators who are actually allowed to work only in select countries.

The adoption laws of the respective land always govern the options chosen by you. So it is important that the adoptive parents are well aware of the variants of placements permissible under the country’s laws. If it is an inter-country adoption, the laws of both the states must be complied with before the child is allowed to join the adopted family.

Basically while choosing an option, the parent/s need to carefully consider their risk tolerant factors. The monitoring and oversight are important factors and the agency adoptions are considered to offer the highest assurance in this regard. On the other hand, the parents are required to be very careful while adopting a child through the facilitators. This of course does not imply that there are no ethical professionals, but the fact is that the oversight mechanisms with the facilitators do not belong to very high standards.

The most Important Factor that Cannot be Overlooked is Whether you can Actually Adopt.

An adoptive parent can be married or single. S/he can be a biological parent to other children, or be childless or a parent of another adopted child. It is necessary that the agencies you employ are fully convinced that the child will be properly cared for in your household and all his requirements through his/her childhood years and later on will be met. If the parent has a divorce or a personal counseling history due to any behavioral problems does not naturally disqualify the person from going ahead with adoption. The aspects that are looked into by the agencies and the court are stability, commitment and permanence. Adoption is not about being a ‘perfect’ parent but being a caring and committed parent.
