What Do Kids Learn from Parent's Behaviour?

What Do Kids Learn from Parent

The way in which a child behaves is greatly influenced by parent’s behaviour. Have a quick look at the things which kids may learn from parent’s behaviour.

Parents greatly influence the behaviour of their children. Children are like sponges, they learn how to tackle things and behave from their parents and incorporate whatever they learn into their own lives. It is very important that parents set right examples for their kids. Negative examples can obstruct the natural flow of a child`s development resulting into bad behaviour.

Social Skills

Children with antisocial behavioural traits learn it from their parents. According to a research carried out by the University of Chicago and published in the Abnormal Child Psychology has pointed out towards the fact that antisocial behaviour of children is due to that of their parents. Social skills comprises of everything from polite “yes” and “thank you” to interacting with a crowd. Children consider their parents as their role model and learn from them.

Stressed Out Behaviour

The parents take on stressful events decides how their children would react to stress. If a parent reacts to stress in a negative way, a child will react negatively as well. In addition, negative behaviour happening due to stress like yelling and lashing out, can leave a child scared and emotionally bruised. Children might learn to shut themselves off if they are stressed out and may even end up thinking that they are the cause of the stress. If parents handle stress in a positive way, it will make children think that their parent`s love for them will never change, even under worst circumstances.

Positive Discipline

The way parents decide to discipline their children greatly influences their behaviour. Recent researches have pointed out towards this fact. When parents decide to spank their kids and punish them harshly, it is not necessary that the kids will learn how to behave or change their behaviour. In such cases children react aggressively to corporal punishment. When parents opt for alternative forms of punishment like time-outs, they are helping their children modify their behaviour in a calm and humane manner.

Fighting Anger

If parents argue with each other in a fair and matured way, it can actually be beneficial to a child. When a child sees how his parents are resolving conflicts in a matured way, he gets inspired and incorporates this positive trait in his life. Verbal and physical fights are extremely bad for children. It torments their delicate brain like anything. Children might even end up blaming themselves for the fights between parents and may leave a child traumatize for times to come. Children may develop low self esteem and might even behave violently towards their peer. Researches have shown that dysfunctional families give birth to dysfunctional children. Children often repeat this kind of violent behaviour in their future relationships.

Child Abuse

Child abuse paves way for a range of antisocial and destructive behaviours. This is cause of the fact that abused children try to understand the reason behind their abuse and try to cope up with this stress. Parents who abuse their children either physically or verbally cause aggression and violence in them. These kids experience learning problems, fail to concentrate and even become drug addicted and alcoholic. Parents who abuse their children provide an atmosphere that is just opposite to what a child needs to be healthy. Both the outer and inner world of a child gets crippled.
Parents are role model of their children. The way they look at life, handle stress, react to adverse situation, argue among themselves on even the most sensitive of matters teaches a child how to look at life and define their behaviour and perception. A child who is exposed to negative influences for a long period of time transforms into an antisocial being and retreat from normal course of life. It is very important for parents to provide their children a calm and positive environment so that they grow up into a humane and just individual.

What do kids learn from parents? How does the behaviour of parents influence kid’s behaviour? How to inculcate good behaviour in kids? Discuss here.
