Tips to Prepare Your Daughter for Puberty and Adolescence

Tips to Prepare Your Daughter for Puberty and Adolescence

A lot of physical and mental changes are experienced by girls while going through puberty and adolescence. Therefore, parents should provide right kind of support to help them cope with it easily. Here are some tips to help girls deal with puberty and adolescence.

Puberty and adolescence in girls – the most tumultuous time for the parents to deal with. Adolescence starts at different times for different girls – there are early puberty, late puberty, speedy adolescence, and slow-but-steady adolescence. Girls’ brains and bodies go through a lot of transformation, which are being bombarded by reproductive hormones and other multiple factors. Here are few tips of how you should help your daughters deal during this “friends come first and families come second” stage.

Be Your Daughter’s Friend

You have to be friendly with your daughter at this stage. You have to smartly merge the role of a parent and a friend at the same time. Talking about her daily life, her emotions, her opinion about various matters, etc. is very necessary. Spend quality time with your daughter; step in her shoes and try to feel the way she feels about anything to feel argumentative about; know your daughter more – be her friend. Once she sees a friend in you, adolescence would be an easy and smooth thing to deal with.

Be Your daughter’s Guide

Give up controlling your daughter now, she is in her teenage now. You can be a guide, but resist the urge to control. You need to provide guidance so that she makes fewer poor choices. Your daughter will make mistakes and learn, but the moment she realizes that you are trying to control her, she will be an anti-you and start becoming argumentative and a rebel. Do not be too much pushy.

Prepare Her for Adolescence

Apart from being a parent, a friend, and a guide, you are also a teacher who has to prepare her girl for the new experience of adolescence. Before your daughter reaches her puberty, you have to prepare her by talking every day about the changes she would be experiencing soon. Make sure she knows about breast and other body changes. You should also let her know about menstrual changes at puberty. These discussions will surely help her to put her mind at ease and be ready to face puberty.

Allow Her to Make Choices

As this is a stage where your daughter’s friends would matter to her most than family, it is better you allow her to make choices. Talk about the curfew time of when she should return home at night or bedtime when she should go for sleep and allow her to decide on these times instead of you setting a time limit for her. You should also discuss about the consequences that she has to face if she breaks her self-made rule. This would surely give her a feel of responsibility.

Show Love and Support

Make your daughter feel that the changes she is going through are very normal – every other girl goes through this. Give her love and support whenever she needs. Be a good listener and listen to all what she needs to say. Often you would feel like disagreeing, but resist yourself to argue, and make her understand your views peacefully. Reassure her that you are by her side – this would comfort her to a great extent at this stage.
It is the crucial time when your daughter will be more conscious about her body and compare it with bodies of other female friends. You should set an example of being comfortable with your body size so that she can also feel confident and comfortable with how she looks. Also set an example of how you behave with others so that she knows her limits when it comes to behaviour. This is not a really bad stage as it seems to be – you both can deal with this difficult time together at ease if you make her ready for this!

When do girls attain puberty? Why is it necessary for parents to provide right kind of emotional support to children during puberty and adolescence? What roles can mother play in helping girls deal with puberty and adolescence? Discuss here.
