Teaching Children the Importance of Trust in Relationship

Teaching Children the Importance of Trust in Relationship
It is essential to teach kids the importance of developing trust in relationship. Such values are necessary for them in order to maintain good relationship with everyone throughout their life. Read on to learn more about teaching children to develop trust in relationship.

Kids are not born with an inner moral compass so more or less it falls upon the parents to teach them important values of life. The importance of trust in relationships is one such critical lesson that parents need to teach their kids. Trust in a relationship will help your kids build sustainable relationships in future and make them happier persons.

Great Role Modelling

Children learn best by following examples and they are naturally inclined to follow you. You can teach your kids to demonstrate trust in a relationship by demonstrating such relations with people around you. Show your kids that you and your spouse trust each other completely. Show your kid that you trust your parents completely. Your children will learn that the world is a warm and happy place which deserves trust.

Discuss Trust

In case your kids are above the age of 5 then talking to them about trust is important. Discuss scenarios where you have trusted people to do a job or to act in a specific way and how happy it had made you. Also talk about situations in which your trust has been eroded and how bad it made you feel. Whenever your kids breach your trust or go back on their word, tell them that they have broken your trust and it made you feel bad. Kids must be made to recognize positive and negative feelings associated with trust.

Develop Trustworthy Relationship with Your Child

Establish a relationship with your kid that is hallmarked with trust and openness. Always give honest (though age appropriate) answers to your children and make sure that they feel free in asking you about anything under the sun. When you and your children develop a trustful relationship with each other, they will learn to appreciate the beauty of trust. The quality of your relationship with your child will set the standards for all future relationships that your child develops with others.

Cultivate and Encourage Trustworthy Friendships

As your kids grow older slowly teach your kids the skill of differentiating between trustworthy and non trustworthy people. When your kids start making friends ask them to focus on those who can keep and nurture trust. If your kids have friends who habitually lie or are insincere then ask them to keep away from such friends explaining why such people are not to be trusted. Learning to forge bonds with the right kids of people is very important for your child in the long run.

Trust Reward Points

For very young kids the reward system works quite well in demonstrating how important trust is. Whenever your child acts in a trustworthy manner by fulfilling some responsibility given to him or her or speaking the truth in a difficult situation then openly commend your kind.
Give a special reward like a movie DVD or a treat to your child which lets him or her know that honesty has its own rewards. However, for older kids its best to stay away from overtly materialistic rewards as they might expect to be bribed all the time to develop trustworthiness. For older children its best to use praise and appreciation as rewards in order to develop a source of intrinsic motivation.

Point out Examples

Whenever you are watching some movie with your kids where the characters display exemplarity trust towards each other, openly point out the situation and praise the characters. Do not shy away from pointing out people who trust each other in real life too. The point is to give your kids as many healthy trustworthy examples as possible.
Teaching children the importance of trust in relationship is probably one of the most important parenting milestones you will have to achieve.
