Children have a carefree, lovable, playful, tension-free life. As adults we all wish to return back to our childhood days to avoid the pressure and stress we face in our daily lives. However, it is very shocking to know that today; these little children also suffer from severe health problems like depression.

Depression is slowly becoming a major problem among children disturbing their cheerful lives. Even children can feel depressed and miserable. For parents it is very important to understand the child and help him or her to cope up with depression. Depression is treatable hence; quick action can help your child from dealing with it. Here are a few ways on how to deal with a depressed child.

Talk to Your Child

Children often do not express their feelings clearly. The child will never say that he is feeling ‘sad’ or ‘irritated’. Their behavioural patterns exhibit their depressive behaviour. Hence; it is very important to talk to the child. Talking to the child will help you in knowing the exact cause of its misery and sadness.

Do Not Panic

If you find that your child is depressed, do not panic. There are many professional psychologists and psychiatrists to help you.

Tell your Child the Truth

Do not hesitate in telling your child the truth. Tell him or her that they are suffering from a mental health illness called depression. Children are very quick in knowing when there is something wrong happening. Hence, telling them the truth will help them fight through the pain.

Help your Child Reveal his Feelings

Give your child a chance to have his feelings. He or she may try to hide his or her feelings as they can sense it very clearly that depression is not good. This will help them tackle with the situation nicely.

Monitor your Child’s Symptoms

Depressed children experience a great change in their day-to-day behaviour. Keep a track of your child’s changing symptoms. Symptoms extending for a long time could bring a lot of unwanted changes in the child’s personality. If your child is experiencing the symptoms for a longer time, consult a professional.

Dealing with Suicidal Tendencies

Suicidal tendencies are one of the dangers of depression. Depressive children may feel suicidal. Pay attention to your child’s such feelings. Do not take it lightly if he or she expresses his or her feeling of suicide.

Give Your Child the Confidence to Talk and Ask for Help

Convince your child that it is all right to seek help from people. Children may or may not ask for help with the fear of being disliked hence; tell the child to ask for help whenever he needs it. Provide the child with a list of contact numbers of your friends, family members, a counsellor or teacher.

Talk to the Child about Depression

Discuss with your child the technicalities of depression. The more you talk it out the child will feel good. Explain your child in a simple language which makes it easy for him to understand.

Mind your Actions

Children learn from parents. Your actions and responses to certain situations will be adopted by your child. The way you deal with situations in life has a big impact on your child. He or she will learn to deal with situations by watching you.

The above tips will help you understand your child patiently and help him or her deal with the mental trauma quickly.
