Storage Tips

In most apartments, space is now at a premium. Not only are large apartments in metropolitan cities very expensive, they are also not very easy to find these days. As a result, many of us find ourselves living in small apartments.
Although living in a compact place has its advantages; it is easier to clean, maintenance costs are low, expenses are low, it has its disadvantages too - the biggest one being lack of storage.

Here are some tips on how you can make the most of storage in a small flat.

Beds

Unless you are living in a huge bungalow, getting beds with storage is a must. In fact, even if you have enough space at home, it helps to get a bed with storage. This is because you can store things like pillows, bedcovers, quilts, blankets, sheets etc. in the bed storage itself, and you don't need to stuff them in your cupboards.
Drawers in beds are easier to use, but use up more space. On the other hand, planks that lift up give you more storage space, but can be a nuisance because they are heavy to lift up.
A great way to get over this problem is to use hydraulic springs. Once these are installed, all you need to do is to use a little initial force and lift the plank up slightly. The plank then lifts up by itself. So if you are getting a double bed made, you can make a single plank that lifts up, giving you storage space equivalent to two cupboards!
Alternatively, you could have sliding doors instead of drawers on the sides. However, this makes more sense if you have a single bed. You could have sliding doors on both sides of a double bed too, as long as one of the sides of the double bed is not against the wall. If you are in a transferable job for example, and don't know how large your next house in another town may be, let your double beds have storage that opens from the top.
Similarly, if you have a single bed, you can make it a little higher, especially if the bed is for your child, to give you more storage. You can keep a small step to the side, so your child can climb up the bed easily.

Centre table

Use a wide, wooden trunk as your centre table for an exotic, oriental look. And, needless to say, you get extra storage. Place a few scented candles on one side, and a few coffee table books, magazines or other decorative item on the other. You can store things that you will not be using very often, or you can even use it for storing items that you intend to use as gifts.

Bedside table

Build a slim matching rack above each bedside table. If you read any books, magazines or papers at night, you can stack them in the rack, instead of crowding and messing up your bedside table. Your bedside table can be used to hold only your alarm clock and water.
