Sibling Relationships

Read about the importance of sibling relationships and how parents can help improve sibling relationships among children. Understand how sibling relations evolve with age and the positive impact having a sibling can have on a child. Siblings are important and will always hold a special place in a person's life.
Sibling relationships often provide great emotional support. As siblings grow older, the bond becomes even stronger and more important. Studies have shown that sibling relationships have a big impact on our psychological and social development.

Sibling relationships last longer than relations with parents. When siblings are closer in age, they have more strong bonds.

Importance of Sibling Relationships

In case of a death of a parent or in houses where there is only a single parent, the older sibling often takes on the responsibility of the younger child. If the single parent is working, it is often the older sibling who takes care of the younger sibling and helps them. Even when both parents are working, parents often entrust the responsibility of looking after the younger one on the older sibling which strengthens the bond between the two bringing them closer.

Sibling relationships are the longest lasting human relationships. Apart from parents who mostly know you right from birth to adulthood, siblings are those people that know you for the longest time. Siblings remain after parents are no more, thus making it the longest relationship in your life.

Siblings share common memories and experiences since childhood. For example your sister and you might be the only ones who remember your grandmother’s bedtime stories or the family trip to a foreign country. Only the two of you may know about the fun you had when both of you were small. The shared memories are precious and often fondly reminisced about as the siblings grow older.

Siblings help to develop problem solving skills. When siblings work out the issues between each other it helps to develop their problem solving skills. Parents should only intervene when there could be aggression or violent behaviour from either sibling.

Those children who have siblings are often more adjusting and cooperative. Children who have siblings understand the importance of giving people their space. They have been taught to share right since childhood hence values such as sharing and understanding the feelings of others develop in them.

How do Sibling Relations evolve over the years

As siblings grow up, they often get busy with their own goals and personal and professional lives.

It is during the middle-age when siblings once again become close to each other.

Often events like birth of grand-children, divorce, illness, retirement once again renew contact between siblings and bring back the bonding.

Many a time, during early and middle years of adulthood siblings relationships are not as close. In such cases, often siblings who have not been much in contact with each other over the years, once again find themselves working together when the need to care for old parents arises.

As siblings become older, they become more emotionally close and it has been seen that generally sister-sister relationships are strongest of sibling relationships. As siblings grow older the conflicts reduce and they become more and more like close friends and sometimes even best friends.

What Parents can do to help maintain and enhance Sibling Relationships

When older siblings leave home, parents must encourage them to stay in touch with the younger sibling.

Parents must maintain good relations and ties with their own brothers and sisters so that this serves as a model example to their children.

A sister or a brother is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost. Siblings are often the ones who know us in and out and extremely well.

A life lived with a sibling is a special and beautiful bond which those who do not have a sibling often wish they could experience.

parents can only nurture a sibling relationship by bringing in peace and love. they need to make the kids understand that there should not be any rivalry but only love between them

the worst thing is when parents go about comparing the children. just because one child scores 90% in the exam does not mean the other one is capable of the same. This affects the sibling relationships
