Week 37: Keep your Bags Packed

Week 37: Keep your Bags Packed

As the pregnancy term draws near, you get anxious about the delivery and labour pains. Get informed about your baby’s development and how to prepare for the delivery and ensure a safe delivery.

Your long wait is about get over, as you are just a month away from the delivery. You may not find significant weight gain in your baby at this stage. However, your overall weight gain must be around 25 pounds to 35 pounds.
Your due date is still a few weeks away, but not all babies follow a strict time schedule. Keep your bags packed as he or she could appear anytime between now and week 42. Especially, if you are expecting twins or if this is a subsequent pregnancy.

Your Baby’s Development in the 37th Week

Even though your baby is said to be full term at this stage, it is better for him or her to stay back in your womb until there are signals that he or she wants to get out. You should wait till your baby comes in the right position with his or her head down. If this is taking a long time, you should have a talk with your doctor. She shall suggest the different possible options with you in this case.
There are both medical as well as natural techniques available to help your baby turn. Your doctor shall examine your condition and suggest the right methods.

Your Baby's Development Continues

Even though there is not much significant weight gain at the 37th week, essential fats continue to get deposited. These fat depositions shall keep your baby warm once he or she is born. Here we shall take a look at some more developments you can expect:

Baby’s Weight

When you get an ultrasound done now, the radiologist shall measure femur, head, and stomach of your baby to get an approximate weight. The baby may weigh around 6 pounds now.

Development of Hair

Over the time you may have developed an image of how your baby shall look. Please do not worry, if her hair has not come out yet. Most of the babies remain bald during the time of birth. Again, some are born with all the hair. With time your baby too shall have all the soft hair on her head.

Baby’s Size

Your baby occupies more space than before and is capable of plenty of new things. His or her brain is bigger in size now and the neutral circuits are "wired". The brain now weighs around 400gms. The size of her head shall be same like that of her abdomen, hips and shoulders. This shall change few weeks after the delivery.

Development of Sensory Organs

By this time she can recognise your voice and shall respond to it as well. His or her eyesight too is improving every day. His or her fingers shall start getting more coordinated and he or she shall be able to grab your finger upon birth.

Preparation for the Labour

This is the time when your body as well as your little one is preparing for the rigorous labour. The umbilical cord is now sending antibodies to your little one to prepare for the delivery. Your baby shall be better ready to fight against all those germs and diseases with all the antibodies stockpiled.
Baby’s added weight will help him or her thrive and survive once he or she is born. She shall have plenty of insulation that will no longer require him or her to depend on the amniotic sac for the cosy environment. She shall start plenty of activities immediately after delivery. However, it is necessary that you keep him or her all wrapped up and warm.
Gathering as much information possible shall be the best way you can deal with labour. When you are armed with knowledge, you can also discuss about the different ways you can deliver your child with your doctor. If you are trying natural methods to induce labour such as castor oil, you must have a talk with your obstetrician first. Rather than deciding anything for yourself, let your obstetrician decide what shall be best for you.
Keep your baby's room warm and clean to welcome him or her on his or her arrival. And make sure your husband is reachable at all hours. Best of luck. Your baby is as ready as can be.

What changes are expected in a baby by the 37th week of pregnancy? How can mothers prepare for delivery? Which health issues may occur during the 37th week of pregnancy? Discuss here.
