Pinworm infection is one of the common health issues during the early childhood years. Pinworms are also known as threadworms or seat-worms. Although, this kind of infection is common in children, it can be very troublesome for them. But there is no need to worry much. If you take right preventive measures, you can keep this squirmy infection away from them. Discussed below are the common symptoms of pinworm infection, tips for treating it and some preventive measures.

Symptoms of Pinworm Infection

Listed below are some of the common symptoms of pinworm infection in children.
  • Itching and redness in anus
  • Pain in abdomen
  • Nausea
  • Restlessness or insomnia
  • Irritation in vaginal area
  • Mood-swings and frustration
In many cases the above mentioned symptoms may not be experienced by children. In other cases if such symptoms are ignored you may start seeing worms in the bowel movements of your children. You may also notice them in their anus when you certainly try to check it when your children complain of itching near that area. They may sometimes also appear in their underwear. When you observe these obvious symptoms, you must consult your doctor immediately.

Treatment for Pinworms

If your child is diagnosed with pinworms, doctor will usually prescribe oral medication for dealing with it. As pinworms can survive for few weeks, doctor may recommend a second dose. You must ensure that you strictly follow your doctor’s advice and avoid giving any kind of over-the-counter medicines to your children.
There are some home remedies as well that can prove very beneficial for treating pinworm infection. Such remedies include remedies like consumption of coconut oil or raw garlic. Coconut oil and raw garlic contain antibacterial and antiviral properties which can prove effective for dealing with pinworms. Another traditional way to deal with the symptoms like itching in anus is to put few drops of coconut oil in the affected area. The medicinal properties can help to heal the affected area as well as stop the pinworms from multiplying.

Tips for Preventing Pinworms

Here are some tips that can help you to nip the problems of pinworms in the bud.
  • Encourage your child to wash hands properly before and after eating.
  • Make sure that your child washes his or her hands frequently.
  • Keep your child’s nails always clean and trimmed.
  • Wash your bed-sheets and towels with disinfectants. Ensure that they are always clean and fresh.
  • Make sure that the toys and other things that your children use are clean.
  • Ensure that your children wear clean clothes and underwear.
  • Avoid making your children wear used clothes.
  • Make sure that your children do not get into the habit of nail-biting and do not put their fingers in their mouth.
  • Take care that areas in which your children are playing are clean.
  • Encourage your children to wash their hands and legs after they comeback home after playing.
Pinworms can be transmitted from one person to another very easily. Therefore, you should make sure that you inculcate hygienic habits in your children. Encourage them to follow hygiene wherever they go. Cultivating good and hygienic habits in your children can not only help you to prevent pinworms but also other common infections in them. Taking right care of their diet is also a must. Similarly, taking right action immediately when you find your child complaining of stomach aches or abdominal pain is essential to nip the problem in bud.
