Tips for Helping Kids with Homework

Dads can get involved in the academics of schoolgoers by helping them with homework on the regular basis. Here is how dads can help schoolgoers with homework.
One of the most integral parts of parenting is to be involved in a positive way with the academic development of your kids. Helping your kids do their homework every day and preparing them for major tests is an important way to demonstrate how concerned you are about their career and academic performance. While your kids may not appreciate homework time initially in the long run they are sure to acknowledge the positive role you have played in helping shape their career. Here are some tips which will help you really help your kids with homework.

Create a Homework Friendly Zone

Homework does not have to be something that your kids dread doing all the time. To make your kids enjoy their homework more you should create a friendly colourful zone especially meant for study times. Put up colourful charts, formula sheets, pictures of science, space and nature etc on the walls. Invest in a black board or a white board and get some comfortable homework special seats too. Remember that kids love being made to feel special and if you make homework time into something special your kids will love looking forward to the homework time.

Prioritise Homework

It does not work if you tell your kids to switch off the T.V during homework time but continue to make work calls or surf the stock market on your mobile at intervals. Your kids are going to understand that their homework is not important to you and as a result they will also start treating it casually. To really establish the importance of a dedicated homework time both you and your kids have to prioritise it. The time allocated for homework must be free from all distractions like T.V, Radio, visits from random people, calls (professional and personal) and basically everything else apart from emergency situations.

Get to Know What is Happening at School

Stay in touch with your kids school teachers and class friends to get a fair idea of what all is being taught in school. Do this non-obtrusively so that your kids do not feel overwhelmed or interfered with. Every academic year at school has a definite purpose and a flow of study and once you get that you will be able to align the homework sessions with the school course in a perfect way.

Understand Your Child’s Coursework

As a parent your role is more than to just help your kids finish a bunch of assignments somehow. The basic idea is to help their academic life progress smoothly. For this you need to understand some basic details about your kid’s coursework. Learn to read maps, skim through pages of text books to pick up things which are really relevant and study algorithms and charts. Apart from reviving your childhood memories this will also refresh your brain and make you contribute to your kid’s homework in a more fruitful way.

Avoid Doing the Job for Them

Sometimes when you are really tired you may feel it is easier to do some assignments for your kids than to actually make them understand and coach them to do it. However, this will send out the wrong signal to your kids by letting them know that you are available to do their work for them. Make your kids do their homework themselves however long it may take you to implement this. This is about teaching your kids responsibility and patience.
Remember that appreciation is important too as well as constructive criticism so learn to deliver both in a logical yet warm and caring way. Make sure that your kids get proper feedback about their academic performance from you.

How can dads get their kids to do homework? Why do kids hate doing homework? What should dads avoid doing when they are helping their kids with homework? Discuss here.
