How to Take Care of Wife in the Second Trimester

Although, some discomforts may start fading away during the second trimester of pregnancy, a man should take good care of his wife during this trimester as well. Here is what a husband can do to take care of his wife during the second trimester of her pregnancy.

In pregnancy each trimester brings with it a fresh store of surprises. However, not all of these surprises are pleasant especially for the mother-to-be. The second trimester usually signals the phase in which the pregnant woman begins to gain weight and this is bound to affect her confidence. This is also the time when her gums and nose may start bleeding sporadically. She will also feel the urge to urinate quite frequently. During the second trimester weekly visits to the doctor is recommended as the baby starts showing changes in growth very fast. As a supportive husband you can do the following things to help your wife during the second trimester.

Helping Cope with Heartburn

Constipation and heartburn affects about 40% of pregnant women in their second trimester. Keep mild antacids that are recommended by an obstetrician in your purse or table drawer so that you can easily give it to your wife whenever she needs one. In case your wife is lactose intolerant then calcium carbonate is an easy alternative for essential calcium.
If your wife is suffering from constipation then get prunes and green leafy vegetable like iceberg lettuce for her.

Coping With Frequent Urination

It is a well documented fact that pregnant women in their second trimester feel the urge to urinate quite a lot. It is very evident that this will make your wife feel quite uncomfortable if she has to visit the washroom every hour. She is likely to feel very self conscious as well. As a supportive husband you should understand her physical limitations and make sure that she has easy access to the washroom. Make sure that there are no objects near the washroom on which she can trip or fall. Also make sure that whenever you are travelling you stop at gas stations frequently and without complaining.

Emotional Involvement

The second trimester of pregnancy usually marks the end of discomforting symptoms like morning sickness and breast tenderness. Usually, women begin to feel better about themselves and their health during the second trimester and they also begin to appreciate and positively experience their pregnancy more. This is an opportunity for husbands to actively involve themselves in the growth of their unborn child as every week in the second trimester will show a marked change in the weight of the foetus. Make sure that you go to every doctor’s appointment with your wife and consciously engage yourself in the miracle of your growing baby. This will prove to be a source of tremendous emotional support for your wife.

Planning Exercise and Self-Care Regimes

If your wife was in the habit of exercising regularly then it is likely that she would have to change her exercise patterns by the time she reaches her second trimester. Her belly would have started expanding making exercise difficult and this will lead to discomfort and body image issues. Help your wife (after prior consultation with your doctor) in chalking up an exercise regimen which is more in tune with her needs. Brisk walking, free hand exercises and low impact exercises are recommended.

Dealing with Dental Problems

There is some probability that your wife is going to experience teeth and gum bleeding problems while she is in her second trimester. Take her to the dentist promptly and do not let the mouth infection spread. You will also need to get medical help if your wife demonstrates gum bleeding very frequently. Get her boxes of tissues for her purse as she is likely to suffer from excess salivation too.
For a man, it is very important to be supportive when his wife is pregnant. A pregnant woman’s husband is the only person who can understand her deeply during this phase. So, it becomes extremely important for an expecting dad to be involved with his wife.
