The Male Birth Control Shot

The Male Birth Control Shot

With advancement in science, newer methods of contraception for males have been found. Male hormonal contraception is a revolution in field of family planning. Through male birth control shots, males take active part in family planning. This is 100% effective and without any side effects. Read on to know more about this type of contraception.

The male birth control shot comprises of a progestin implant along with a number of predetermined shots of androgen. Both of them are hormones that react on the brain signals that make the body to produce sperm. The premier health institutes around the world like UCLA, Who and University of Sydney are conducting clinical trials on the effects and results attained through this male birth control shot. This is yet to be made available for general public and is considered to be an effective method to prevent pregnancy.

How Would you Identify It?

Although it is at a clinical trial stage, given below are the definite characteristics of the male birth control shot:

  • As said earlier, it is an implant of progestin and androgen injections
  • The normal testosterone level is controlled by the progestin and thus halts the production of the sperm. When the sperms are stopped, fertilisation does not take place and pregnancy is averted.
  • Even after the production of the testosterone is stopped, the administration of the androgen shots is continued so that the health of the man is sustained and he continues to have a normal sex drive.
  • It has no proven side effect

What is the Significance of this Contraception?

Male birth control shot is considered to be a revolutionary product as it is a very practical and convenient contraceptive option. This is true especially for couples where the woman suffers an adverse reaction to birth control pills and other female contraceptive measures.

The effectiveness of this method is proved to be 100% thereby making it a preferred option in comparison to condoms and cervical caps. The later two are till now the popular choices although they do not have a highly impressive success rate.

Factors That you Need to Consider

Condoms have been a barrier method in the contraceptive domain for a pretty long time. The male birth control shot goes further than an invasive method and can be off putting for some.

  • It is always upon the couple to discuss and decide on the contraceptive method that will be most beneficial to them.
  • Given its 100% success rate and zero side effect action, the male contraceptive shot is indeed an attractive option.
  • The man needs to be comfortable with the testosterone implant and be ready to receive the regular progestin injections.
  • The contraception is easily and painlessly reversible. It simply requires the removal of the testosterone implant and halting of the progestin shots.

Since a long time, the onus of contraception has been focused only on women. It was their choice or responsibility to take effective measures that would keep them safe from unwanted pregnancies. They have therefore willfully or otherwise undergone invasive testing and a host of other methods to control their pregnancy and fertility.

There have been and are popular female contraceptive methods like pills, IUDs, female condom, patches, birth control shots, cervical caps, implants, and sponge. Apart from the female condoms, all the other contraceptives have a number of unavoidable side effects. But this male birth control shot is simply devoid of any side effects whatsoever.

The only point to note is that this shot is effective for the prevention of pregnancy but not against the sexually transmitted diseases like HIV and AIDS.

How come they do not have any serious side effects? What will be the waiting time before planning a baby?
