Babies express their feelings by way of crying. Mothers have to find out the reasons of crying. Crying may be due to various factors as hunger, wet nappy, illness or pain. Picking up the baby when crying, helps the baby to feel secure.

Why do babies usually cry?

Babies usually cry when they are hungry. Another common reason why babies cry is the need to feel mother’s warmth and feel secure. Babies also cry when they start feeling uncomfortable in their wet or dirty diapers. Constant crying in babies may indicate that she is coping with colic pain. Babies may also cry when the vaccination shots are hurting them. Unusual and continuous crying can also be a sign of illness in a baby.

How can I stop my baby from crying?

While there are several ways in which parents can cope with crying babies, there is no prescribed formula. None of these methods will work all of the time, some may not work at all. But they are all worth trying. First, try to determine whether there is a basic underlying problem. For instance, if you think the baby is hungry, try the breast or bottle. May be you need to change her nappy, remove or add a layer of clothing or reposition the baby. At times, swaddling or gently rocking them may also help them to feel comfortable. If none of these is the cause for the baby's crying, then go through the checklist of what you can do.

If I pick her up every time she cries, will I be spoiling her?

Many mothers believe that if you carry your baby every time she cries you will be spoiling her. This may be true for an older baby. (Some experts argue that you should not even think of these discipline issues before the child is 6-7 months old). But for a newborn baby, you should carry her as often as she likes. This is her way of telling you that she wants to feel safe and secure. Do not forget she has spent the past nine months cuddled up in her mother's womb.

When should the doctor be called?

Your baby's seemingly endless daily screaming sessions are probably perfectly normal. Just to be on the safe side, mention the crying, its duration, intensity, pattern, and particularly any variations from the norm to the doctor. Sudden sustained crying in a baby, who has not cried a lot previously, could indicate pain or illness. With advances in medical knowledge, the medical community is finding that certain aspects of crying may provide clues to illness. If a baby's cry is inexplicably high-pitched, it could indicate illness.

What can be done to help babies be happy and cheerful?

We cannot completely prevent babies from crying as it is the only way through which they communicate. But there are few things that we can do to prevent the episodes of crying in them. You must make sure that your baby’s room is well ventilated. Her room should be clean and hygienic. If there are mosquitoes in your house, you must make proper provisions so that your baby is not bitten by mosquitoes.
Make your baby wear appropriate clothes as per the climatic conditions to make her feel comfortable. Massaging her can help her to get rid of stress and get a good sleep. Feed her from time-to-time and help her burp so that she does not face any trouble. While getting her vaccinated, make her wear appropriate clothes. Follow your doctor’s advice in order to make the shots hurt less. Never leave your baby alone and attend to her immediately when she cries.

i found this site very informative. my own exp. with my baby is babies often fry due to stomach upsets and gripe water does help. all babies are intelligent creatures and also cry to get attention. there is a recent experiment called "controlled crying". let the baby cry for some time, then go and pacify her for some time and leave her alone. slowly increase the time before u go to pacify her. within a month most babies bouts of crying stop.

nope not at all times! my 2 year old son cries only in the evenings when we come back home from work. we amusingly call it his "week day evening syndrome" but in reality he just wnats attention from us. since the whole day he would be away from his parents in the daycare with other children and teachers, he shows by crying and nagging in the evening when he reaches home, that how much he had missed us whole day! initially we used to get upset and ignore him but now one of us sits beside him and shower affection for about half and hour or so. he gets back to normalcy after that. we now are slowly comprehending his actions and trying to understand his problems and finding out a solution for it! happy parenting!:0)

i have a baby of my own and he is a month old. he eats alot, every three hours or so he drink about 5-6 oz. i am 15 and i am getting the hang of taking care of my baby, actually i got so good at it that a nother mother asked me if i could babysitt her 3 month old. i said yes but that first day, that baby cryed repediately and very loud, i was not prepared for that. well i then asked the mother why did he cry like if they were hitting him or screaming at him and she told me that he did not recognize my voice. then i wondred if baby's are smart enough to determine who is and who is not their pearents.
