India - The Hottest Destination for Renting a Womb

Renting a womb has fast become a booming industry. It has become a boon for childless couples or for couples with infertility problems. India is the hottest destination for childless couples looking out for renting a womb. Read on to know more about renting a womb.

India tops the outsourcing list and also caters to a wide array of Foreign Service sectors. A lot of recent studies have shown that there has been a dramatic rise in foreign couples seeking to rent a womb preferring to come to India for the purpose. There are a lot of reasons that have encouraged people looking towards Indian women who are volunteers for renting their wombs to childless couples.

The two most notable amongst them are:
  1. Relative affordability
  2. Lenient legal restrictions

The rate of compensation for Indian mothers willing to rent their wombs is pretty high and they have evolved as a steady pool of suppliers for this womb renting industry. Renting a womb on a commercial basis received legal sanction in 2002 and since then the flourish has been unstoppable. However, there are certain issues that need to be sorted out. Most of them are related to bioethical implications. According to several legal and sociological experts, the entire concept of legal monitoring and regulation is required to be further nurtured and developed.

The Financial Gains of Womb Renting

It is primarily the financial aspect that is responsible for a boom in this renting womb industry in India. The cost of renting a womb also includes the medical treatment and other associated medical costs. If you consider the amount of total charges in United States of America, the total can add up to approximately $70,000. In India the same can be obtained at around a seventh of that cost. India scores in being not only a lower cost country but the fact that medical technology in India is quite developed and world class, foreigners readily prefer this part of the world.

The Socio-Economic Structure Makes it More Alluring

The financial aspect is quite important as the economic statuses of majority of the Indian families are in need to gaining a better foothold in the society. When a woman rents her womb, she stands to earn something around $6,000. This amount can help her family get a new house, perhaps repay the debts and some couples may even plan future investment for their own children’s education or health. Mostly Indian women who agree to rent their wombs belong to the lower strata of the socio-economic structure where the above mentioned prospects naturally appear to be pretty attractive. A nine month pregnancy can yield some dramatic results in terms of financial gain and can even settle their life.

Womb Renting Drawbacks and Exploitation

Put bluntly, this is a simple demographic trend. But when this trend is viewed from close quarters there are a lot of issues that crop up from the underbelly of this flourishing industry. One can often find a big or touching story of exploitation that borders on class, gender and even race. In some cases, womb for rent comes across as a basic violation of human rights, where the woman is rather compelled to allow her body to be used for someone else’s gain, which is often a member of her family.

These are certain issues that have prompted countries like Australia and UK to ban this entire concept of renting a womb in their respective countries. So for couples who are desperate for a solution to their infertility problems look towards the booming Indian fertility clinics that seem to provide them with ready solutions. When France had outlawed surrogacy and renting wombs, it declared, “The human body is not lent out, is not rented out, and is not sold.”

But in India, people have taken a different stance as they seem to believe the entire idea of renting a womb can result in mutual benefits of both the parties and change lives for better. Although, it does have benefits, one must ensure that the ethical issues are taken care of in the process.

I agree that laws are lenient and cost is low but it also means that doctors are also well equipped and knowledgeable.
