The Basics of Sperm Donation

The Basics of Sperm Donation

Sperm donation helps infertile couples to enjoy parenthood. A person can donate sperm only when he fulfills the criteria and undergoes comprehensive screening process. The success rate with donor sperm is high but it also depends on many other factors. Get an insight into the basics of sperm donation process.

Reproductive technologies have made great advancements making it rather unnecessary the requirement of a sperm donor. But in some cases, sperm donation happens to be the only way to make a pregnancy possible for an infertile couple. The invention on ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) makes conception easier today.

Who Requires Sperm Donors?

There can be a variety of reasons why an individual or a couple might choose the services of a sperm donor. Single women who want to experience the joy of motherhood or lesbian couples might like to go for pregnancies through sperm donations. This happens to be the only way they can create families. And in heterosexual couples if the man happen to be sterile, sperm donors provide the sperm sample to the woman.

Choosing a Donor Is a Complex Process

The woman can choose to get pregnant through a sperm donor but there are a wide array of issues that she needs to deal with in the first very first instant that is, before really proceeding with the fertilisation process. The individual or the couple might wish to get a sperm donor from within their family, friend circle or can even go for an anonymous person.
Whatever the choice, doctors and clinics always recommend the parties concerned to sit for counseling sessions. There can be a lot of family questions and issues that have social ramifications and upheaval the lives of the woman and her immediate family. Then in some cases if there is a certain genetic disease in the family, the couple may want to opt for a sperm donor so that the child is saved from falling prey to the disease.

The Attributes Considered

Apart from the usual health related attributes, there are certain other attributes that are considered by the clinics and the couple or woman as well. Some of the usual ones are:
  • The person must be not less than 18-19 years of age and over 38-40 years.
  • The person's height must be preferably between 5'7" to 5'9".
  • He should have a minimum educational qualification like being at least a high school graduate. Some of the sperm banks and fertility clinic want their donors to have enrolled in a college.
  • Majority of the sperm banks want their donors to be a local resident and living near the facility.
  • Apart from the physical well-being, some check the ethnic or racial background.

The Success Rate of Artificial Insemination

The sperms from the sperm donor can be used in In Vitro Fertilisation or IUI. The sperm of an anonymous donor is purchased from the sperm bank. If the sperms are obtained from an acquaintance, the sperm is required to be kept in isolation for at least 6 months. This is then retested and primed for the IVF or IUI.
Pregnancy with a sperm donor depends on a number of factors.
  • The age of the woman.
  • The past history of her pregnancy.
  • The method in which she was inseminated plays a big role. The number of insemination trials that she had plays a vital part too.
  • If the woman is below the age of thirty-five and does not have any infertility issues, stands the best chance to become pregnant readily with the donor sperm.
  • In the artificial fertilisation process, it is possible to conduct more than one, that is, two inseminations for each cycle, so if the woman is not able to conceive even after a good number of cycles, she probably has fertility problems and is then medically tested for the same.
