Health Hazards of Vitamin Deficiency in Kids

Vitamin deficiency can be responsible for serious health hazards in kids. Therefore, it is essential to make sure that children are not deprived any important nutrients. Have a quick look at the cause and harmful effects of vitamin deficiency in kids and tips for preventing it.

Vitamins are those essential nutrients that are needed by the body in small amount. The body absorbs essential vitamins through the foods we eat. Vitamins are the building blocks of the body and they are also essential part of body support system. If kids do not have those food items included in their diets that have particular vitamins, it would cause vitamin deficiency and over the period of time would cause serious health hazards.

Causes of Vitamin Deficiency in Children

Children of recent times have a very fast lifestyle and that has caused a great impact on the food habits of the children. Children are getting more inclined towards fast foods which generally lack many essential nutrients needed by the kids’ body.  Most of the children are not having the habit of eating fresh fruits and vegetable which are rich sources of vitamins which ultimately lead to deficiency of different types of vitamins in their body.

Symptoms of Vitamin Deficiency in Children

Deficiency of different types of vitamins causes different types of symptoms in children. These symptoms are given below:

Deficiency of Vitamin A

Night blindness is the main consequence of deficiency of Vitamin A in a child. Lack of vitamin A may cause weakness, weight loss, hair loss and fatigue. Scaling of skin, dry eyes and respiratory infections are also the signs of vitamin A deficiency.

Deficiency of Vitamin D

When a child has Vitamin D deficiency, the child will have signs like muscle cramps, irritability, stunted growth, breathing difficulties.

Deficiency of Vitamin C

Dry skin, joint pain, poor appetite and frequent infections are the signs of vitamin C. other symptoms of Vitamin C deficiency are bleeding nose, anaemia, gingivitis, slow wound healing, easy bruising.

Vitamin E

The signs of Vitamin E are muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, liver disease, disorder of motor speech, and lack of muscle movement coordination.

Vitamin B6

Deficiency of Vitamin B6 in kids causes anaemia, seizures, irritability and weakness. Other symptoms are temper-tantrums, hyperactivity and inattentiveness.

Vitamin B12

Deficiency of Vitamin B12 can cause serious effects on the functioning of brain. It also affects the proper functioning of nervous system and heart. The symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency in kids are weakness, oedema, abdominal pain and insomnia.

How Children Can Get Vitamins?

Children can get vitamins needed by their body by having balanced diet. This diet should have proper amount of dairy and milk products, proteins and fresh vegetables and fruits. Some children who fail to have balanced diet comprising of home cooked foods, children involved in sports, sick children and those who suffer from asthma and other chronic diseases may need vitamin supplements.

Preventing Vitamin Deficiency in Kids

The only way to prevent vitamin deficiency in kids is to provide them those food items in their daily diet which contain particular vitamins. If needed vitamin supplements can also be given to them on the advice of the doctors.

Sources of Vitamin A - eggs, milk, cheese, squash, sweet potato and carrots are good sources of Vitamin A.

Sources of Vitamin B - The rich sources of vitamin B that is B2, B3, B12 and B6 are fish, chicken, eggs, meat, milk, beans, nuts, and cheese.

Sources of Vitamin C - Vitamin C is present in abundance in citrus fruits, broccoli, tomatoes, strawberries and kiwi.

Sources of Vitamin D - Rich sources of vitamin D are egg yolks, yogurt, cheese and milk.

Parents must take care of the diet of their children so that they do not have deficiency of any particular kind of vitamin. But at the same time, they should also keep in mind that excessive vitamin intake will increase the amount of toxin in the body.
