Fever in children is very common and in some cases, no medicine is needed to cure it. Fever is not a disease rather it is the symptom which indicates that the body is fighting with infection. Medicines are there to treat fever and in the worst case they are to be given to bring the temperature down. If fever in children can be treated by using certain home remedies it is very soothing for the children. The symptoms of fever are unpleasant for any child and home remedies can relieve the children from these symptoms without using medicines.

Causes of Fever in Children

Fever is not life threatening unless it is persistent in nature and temperature remains very high (107° F or 41.5° C). If a child is having fever recurrently or the fever is lasting for a week or more, it may cause serious health hazards if not treated in time. Fever is caused when the child is having any kind of bacterial infection or viral infection. Fever may also happen as a result of some drug reaction. Fever could also be caused due to some inflammatory diseases or allergies.

Symptoms of Fever in Children

Fever causes irritation in children especially an infant remains irritable when it has the fever. Children behave in fussy manner when they have the fever. Children feel lethargic and remain quiet when they have fever. Children stop eating their normal diet due to fever.
Rapid breathing, continuous crying, and changes in eating or sleeping habits are also symptoms of fever in children. Children also feel colder or warmer as compared to others around them. Some children have the headache and body ache when they have fever. Some children may also have seizures when they have fever.

When to Go for Medical Help?

Though home remedies are helpful in reducing fever in children, there are certain cases where medical intervention is needed and parent must not go for home remedies and wait for the remission of fever in their children. If the child is below 6 months then the child must be taken to the doctor for treating fever.
When fever is not getting controlled even after trying out different home remedies, the child should be immediately taken to the doctor. If the child is showing symptoms of dehydration i.e. no urination for long hours, sunken eyes etc. then immediate medical advice is needed. Despite following the course of treatment, new symptoms are shown. Children who have the history of seizures during fever must be taken to the doctor even if the temperature is low.

Give a Cold Sponge to the Body

When the child has high temperature then wiping the entire body with wet towel or wash cloth helps in reducing the temperature. A towel or wash cloth should be soaked in cold water and excess water should be rinsed. This cloth can be used to sponge different body parts like armpit, hand, feet, face, and back.

Eating Raisins

Raisins are very good in fighting bacterial infections and they are also helpful in reducing fever. 25 raisins should be soaked in half cup of water. When the raisins become soft they have to be crushed and then the liquid is strained. To this liquid, lime juice is added and it should be taken two times in a day. Do consult your pediatrician before trying this or any other home remedy on your child.
Fever may be associated with vomiting or diarrhoea and this takes out maximum fluid from the body so it is very important that a child should be given enough water or liquids to drink so that he or she remain hydrated during fever. Plain water, juices, soups, etc can be given to the child during fever.
