Coping with Eczema in Babies

Coping with Eczema in Babies

Baby eczema is a type of allergy that causes persistent itching in babies. Find out the causes and how to control the rash and reduce the itching sensation in babies.

Baby eczema or infant eczema is clinically known as atopic dermatitis. It is usually found to occur in babies who are between two to six months of age. It is an itchy rash that starts from the face and begins to spread behind the ears to the neck, arms, legs and torso region. The rashes appear as tiny pimples or papules that are often filled with some fluid. After a few days from appearing, they burst and make the condition worse as the itching happens.

A list of symptoms follows from here on that calls for medical attention and cause a good amount of discomfort to the little one. In most cases it is found that the rashes disappear when the baby attains the age of eighteen months or so. By the age of three, the rashes disappear totally.

Causes of Eczema in Babies

Allergy is the principle cause of eczema in babies. If the family has a history of allergies, be it eczema, asthma or hay fever. There can basically be a wide array of other factors that can trigger off a skin irritation in the kid, which eventually results in baby eczema. Babies do not understand how to control and once they keep on rubbing the skin due to the persistent itching, the condition gets aggravated even more.

The skin thus becomes drier and more vulnerable to a host of other irritants present in the environment. This is in fact a vicious cycle that keeps on repeating itself. The condition can only be checked through extreme care and timely and regular medication and maintenance of hygiene. Given below are some of the common factors that trigger off baby eczema:

  • Heat
  • Dust
  • Soaps and detergent
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Pet or any animal dander
  • Fabrics, especially the rough or scratchy ones
  • Moisture from sweat, milk or contaminated water
  • Various types of food allergies emanating from citrus fruits, cow’s milk, nuts, egg whites or chocolates

How to Control Eczema in Babies

Like any other skin treatment, eczema requires immediate medical attention. Always act on the advice of the paediatrician. He might suggest medicated lotions and creams, so that the spread of the rashes is controlled and the itching is comparatively less troublesome. Here are some ways by which you can ensure that the eczema is under control:

Provide Cool Environment

Try to keep the baby in a cool environment as the infection spreads in a warm atmosphere. Make sure that the baby does not sweat much. Cover the baby if required with thin blankets that are soft on the skin and clothed in lightweight cotton fabrics.

Take Care of Baby’s Diet

It is advisable to eliminate cow’s milk from the diet of the baby for the time being or until the doctor approve of it. Similarly, also avoid citrus fruits, nuts, chocolates, egg whites and all such food items that you have seen the baby to react against it. However, it is recommended that you do not put a stop to all of them in a single go, but remove them all one by one within a time frame. This because, an immediate and total ban on allergy causing food items will render the baby comparatively less able to accept the items back in his system even long after he is out of the eczema.

Take Right Care of Baby’s Clothes

Always use detergents that are recommended for soft and sensitive skin. Do not dress the baby in rough or scratchy fabrics, like wools.

Take Right Care of Baby’s Skin

Bathe the baby in lukewarm water with ultra-mild soaps so that the skin does not get dry too much and make sure that you preserve the natural moisture of the skin by wiping him dry soon after the bath and apply doctor recommended lotions.

Take Good Care of Baby’s Nails

Always make sure that the nails of the baby are cut short. This will ensure that even if the baby scratches his rashes, the damage is well under control or rather prevented. Use mittens to cover the arms of the baby and socks when he is sleeping so that he does not scratch his skin unconsciously.

Finally, make it a point that you immediately call on a paediatrician the very moment you suspect that the baby is suffering from eczema. Usually, hydrocortisone creams and ointments are prescribed to control the rash and the spread of the rashes and antihistamine drugs are applied to reduce the itching sensation. In case the infection spreads further and the condition aggravates, antibiotics are prescribed. Basically, it is all about taking care of simple factors and observing the suggestions of the doctor in relation to medicines and diet.
