do you have any kids?
K.Radha replied. Hey Again,
The first thing you need to do is get a referal to a good endocrinologist to discover and treat the cause of your hyerthyroidism, you' ll probably need to have an ultrasound done on your thyroid and a nuclear scan along with some blood tests and then the course of action is decided upon. Medication, removal of the offending are of the thyroid (or all of it) or Radio Active Iodine (RAI) to destroy the thyroid. It can take several months for hyperthyroidsim to come under control with medication and some years before you' re free of meds, there is also a chance of relapse where as removal of the organ will remove the problem permenantly and instantly. RAI is generally given in a single dose, the thyroid absorbs the iodine and the radioactive particals in it detroy the problem cells. If you choose this route you will have to practice safe sex for 6 months because residual radioactivity is a concern on the fetus.
Have you noticed any of the following symtoms:
Palpitations
Heat intolerance
Nervousness
Emotional Liability
Insomnia
Breathlessness
Increased bowel movements
Light or absent menstrual periods
Fatigue
Fast heart rate
Trembling hands
Weight loss (or gain)
Muscle weakness
Warm moist skin
Hair loss
Hyperthyroidism can affect menstrual cycles, making them lighter or irregular and in my case they disappeared altogether. It can be harder to fall pregnant with hyperthyroidism, and there is an increased chance of miscarriage. A woman with fertility problems or repeated miscarriages with symptoms of hyperthyroidism it is important to rule out this condition before TTC. The very best course of treatment for you to consider right now is getting in to see a specialist who deals with this problem, your treatment WILL be dependant on MANY factors and it is going to take an endocrinologist to do that. I hope this has been of some help. If you have any other questions I will try to answer them as best I can.
K.Radha replied. Ohhhh I' ll send you a post this afternoon, I have hyperthyroidism myself, Graves Disease... I' m just about to shoot out the door to go to work but I will reply first thing this arvo.... It is a concern to your child is you conceive at the moment.... Anyway I' ll reply later!

Hey Rux,
It is possible for your thyroid to swing from hypo to hyper but if you are already on thyroxine then it might be a good idea to have your dosage adjusted. As for staying on the medication, well, I don´ t know thatyou should stop but you NEED to get in to see your doc or endo asap because if you are currenly hyper and on thyroxine the problem is going to get worse! The purpose of that drug is to increase thyroid function, isnt it?
I don´ t know a whole lot about being hypo but perhaps TBP can offer some more advice. With a thyroid condistion it can be VERY VERY hard to conceive and the exact mechanisms behind that is difficult to pin point and explain. Are you absolutely certain that you have classic PCOS or has it been suggested that its caused from the thyroid condition. I have something that presents almost exactly like PCOS but it isnt true pcos, its just something that occurs with a thyroid condition. A lot of women find pregnancy causes their thyroid to function in normal ranges and medication can be taylored to suit.
As a rule it is better to be slightly hyper than hypo when TTC. Being too hypo can cause the babies thyroid not to develop properly and rarely not at all, also there are some concerns for the childs intellectual development. As TBP said, do make every effort to find yourself a GOOD doctor to treat you while in India. I think after 5 years of trying it is time to see a specialist! All the best with your baby making.

Hi Rux,
Do you have hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. It is my understanding that thyroxine is taken for hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid. As time passes, your dose may need to be adjusted occasionally. If you are getting too much thyroxine, you may become hyperthyroid due to excess medication.
I have Hypothyroidism as well as PCOS.When I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism,I was started out with 100mcg and within 2-3 years my dose had to be reduced to 50 mcg.I need to get bloodwork done atleast once a year to check my levels.
Anyway,I agree with K. Radha. You need to see an endocrinologist. If you have been trying for almost 5 years now,you should try to see a reproductive endocrinologist and discuss this matter with him or her.I am myself under the care of a reproductive endocrinologist and trust me it makes a world of difference. You need to wait to TTC till your thyroid levels are normal because it can pose a risk to your baby.
You mentioned that you are going to India for treatment.Make sure you see a doctor with a good reputation. Some of the girls here have had bad experiences,so be careful.
Wish you all the best.If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Will try my best to answer.
Take Care.

I had septum in the uterus and got removed. Since I had a history of ectopic pregnancies, both my fallopian tubes are tied. Due to the poor ovarian reserve ... - Malini [View Message]
