Feeding:Rocking baby to sleep

I know it our fault but we (hus / me) have put our baby into a bad habit. Each time she wants to sleep we have to rock her and sing to her. If she get up in the middle of the night we have to get up and sing to her and rock her. How do i get her to sleep on her own. I have tried to just leave her on the bed with me beside her but she starts crying and wants me to pick her up. Even when we take her out, shop or restaurant and she is sleepy, i have to rock her and sign... (kinda embarassing)...

Please give me some suggestions to get her out of this habit.

Have you checked out the babycenter website for tips on how to soothe your baby to sleep?

I used Dr Sears Babybook and website guidelines for several months...but after I became totally exhausted and reached a breaking point with no sleep and rest - I bought the book that my doctor had recommended to me -\" Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child\" by Marc Weissbluth.

Please go and check this book out. It is not as extreme as ferber and not as soft as Sears. Somewhere in between.

You can read it and find clues as to a baby' s sleeping pattern and how best to sleep train your baby.

About rocking - I still do that to my baby...wherever we are. We are parents, so it shouldn' t be embarrassing.. :)

But as I said, pls read the above books. I' m sure they' ll help you.

If your baby is 9 months or more ,try the ferber method. It may be hard in the beginning but worth it. Google for more info - keyword is ferber.
My daughter is 5 months and she needs to be rocked to sleep. she sleeps thru the nite and if she wakes up in the nite ,I stick a pacifier in her mouth and she snoozes again. Does your daughter take a pacifier? if yes, try giving her one to soothe her.

MG

neither am I trying to impose my views here - but here´ s my take. If you read about ferber´ s theory it makes a lot of sense. You need to see the long term benefits for the baby and you. Ferber says ,if the baby wants to play with a knife and cries if you took it away from him ,would you let him play with to please him? That´ s his counter argument for attachment parenting of Dr. sears.
For each their own.

Hi,
I read abt this Ferber method. I found it cruel. I mean, isn´ t it harsh to leave such a small baby crying for 10 min, 15 min...
I use a pacifier. As swapna said, it works for me also. U can try a soft toy, soft blanket etc. For my son, his blanket is a must before he sleeps. He wants to hold it when he is sleepy.

Abt ferebr method, these are strictly my views. I am not starting any controversy here.

Thanks,
MG
