ahve a 5 1/2 month old and I give her the following:
1. rice cereal, oatmeal or multi grain cereal,
2. boiled and mashed carrots, yellow squash, green peas.
3. boiled and mashed dal or moong. Sometimes this is mixedwith over cooked rice.
4. and boiled and/or mashed fruits- apple, banana and mangoes.

sometimes she will take a lot of quantity and sometimes she will not. But I do not force her. She takes if she wants and if she turns her face or spits out the food more than 3 times then I just give her BM or formula to fill her stomach. She is the judge. My doc said this is very important as she learns to understand her hunger needs and how to fulfil it. If we force then they loose this sense and in the long run this has been proved to be a cause of obesity.
Good luck with your baby. Try to be patient.

i totally agree with x2..i hv read many msgs where mothers complain about eating habits...weight...go easy n its just not possible to make them eat in 1 day or week...u hv to understand them every baby is diff n their likes n dislikes are diff...no 2 babies are alike...
my baby has not changed but i hv changed myself..touchwood...she is doing fine no probs with her..
i hv learnt one thing from my daughter the more she plays ..properly she eats n sleep...sometimes she only sleeps more..soemtimes she jsut doesnt eat...i hv stoped forcing her n following timetable like b4..i just keep a track of what she eating n how much....thats it...i know now wht she likes...

Nikita,sachna and gauri
My daughter has completed 5 months and Ive started her on rice cereal, just once in the morning. She didn' t have any reactions to it except constipation.
I was thinking of slowly getting her used to eating with a spoon (coz she gets mad whenever she sees the bowl and spoon) and by the time she' s 6 months ,she needs to be predominantly on solids.
And btw, I can' t grind ragi here. I dunno if I can give her the ragi powder but Im a bit anal about using it.
I' ll dig up the old messages and see if our feeding sessions goes.
As of now, it' s a nightmare ,getting her strapped and sticking a spoon in her mouth.

Till a baby is 1 year old, solids should be supplemental. The main nutrition the baby will be getting is from milk.

If your baby does not like rice cereal too much, try adding a little bit of gerber carrots to it. Mine found it more accepting when I mixed green beans/carrots/sweet potatoes with the rice cereal.

However, don´ t force the baby too much. She will develop an aversion to food. No need to force feed her. She is young and will take time to develop a taste for solids. Try different things and see which one she likes more. Then you can feed her that for a few days.
