Health Issues:Fear of Math
2015-01-21
Name: Priya Kataria

My kid is unable to comprehend Math. He is now 5 years old but is not able to do basic sums. I tried to make him understand but nothing seems to work. I had also kept private tuition for him so that he is able to get over the fear of Math. Nothing is helping him. Is this some kind of disability?

Hi Priya, you can put your child in abacus classes which will help your kid in maths at the same time help him enjoying the sums he solves. Also try to teach maths through video tutorials and other activities.

Kids or people in general fear things and specially subjects when they think that no matter how hard they try they would not be able to do it but you will have to support and encourage your child to remove the fear.

Maths is such a subject that people either understand it completely or they just can't at all. People who have the fear or not only maths but any subject find it very difficult to cope up with it no matter how well it is explained.

I know a lot of people who have a fear of maths including my friends. They only way to get them interested is to find much simpler ways of explaining them the concepts. One can also use audio video ways to explain it to them.

Hi Priya,
Your kid is just five and you need to keep more stress on him you need to teach all basics with patience and you need to be so friendly with him so that he would listen to you i think you got my point.

hi i had the same problem with math when i was a child. it is not a disability. every person's brain doesn;t work with the same way. some are not good in maths some are not in languages, some are not good in gestures. it is like their parts of the brain is not that strong. he may be good in other things find out that. and try to understand him and try new techniques and teach him math with some funny ways etc.

Hi Priya!
Firstly be calm and accept that not every kid can understand everything at an instance. Try any different and useful methods that help your kid to understand. Use pebbles or any color beads to teach counting. Likewise use two different color beads to teach addition or subtraction. I would say my kid as an example here. He never understood math when he was studying in his kinder garden class but when we admitted in Orchids International school his understanding capability as well as solving capabilities in math increased. Teachers also play an important role here, so try to talk with his teacher to take any necessary action.
