Hi there!
My son is 14 months old, he started taking formula from 6th month, now since 2-3 weeks he has stopped taking milk.Since i go to work , he is breast fed in the night and in the morning.
He is 9 kgs and his birth weight was 3.25 Kgs, my doc says if i stop breastfeeding, he will gain weight. Please advice me as what to do to gain his weight ?
Also, he eats the food in the Paste form, he doesnt chew and eat, he wants the fruits in the milk shake format. If i give him unsmashed rice, he pukes...Please let me know how to make him eat fruits and biscuits? waiting for the reply

Hetal replied. 14months, i expect that milk = whole milk or cows milk...
you are saying that formula from 6th month,,,is he still on formula milk ?????
what your dr stands true, because he is not getting nething from your bm,,thats how he has stoppd gaining wght..he is gettng waterlike milk which is not doing ne good to him...BM is good but not at the cost of baby wght !! if bm is not sufficient to provide enough nutrients which is very much reflected in wght,,..
if you are having a good supply of bm without adequate fat levels,,its better to wean baby and offer pumped milk(not as a main feed) but as a snack..
you are offering breast as main feed, like night and morning and thats how you are replacng imp fat levels that a 14months old needs !!!!!!
apart from that,,about paste like food,,graduate him, but at the same time, respect his texture prefercnes,,you can't force a baby irrespective of age, unless he himself knows how to swallow or coordnate the muscles or chew the foods !
check the posts below and it should help you in introducing lumpier foods, textured foods and other fruit offerng ideas....here is the matter...
1.best way to intrduce lumpier food is increasing the texture of the food you are already offering as of now..lets say you are offering dal/rice and vegies,,,
one day, give your baby mashed dal/rice,and mashed vegies,,,
day 2, give mashed dal/rice and unmashed tiny overcooked pieces of vegies which are often like lumps,,while offering in one spoon,,give one lump first. dont give dal/rice gravy with it,,see how your baby reacts,,if he throws up, the next bite what you will do is, mash the other bite with your hand and its bit unmashed but easier to eat or dissolve in mouth,,,see how he reacts and accordingly bring him to the level that he eats lumps well..
offer one lump first in first spoon and the second will be gravy,,so that his mouth/throat passage does not feel dry with lumpy texture,,sometimes thats what choke babies !!!
day 3,offer mmore number of lumps and increased texture just in the same way,,give him enough time to learn how to eat them ! babies do choke in many tries,,but you have to keep trying,,the size of lumps are very small as if like peas !!!
day 4, give more lumpier foods, with bigger size,..tell him to pick it himself..just place the bowl before him,,let him play and njoy the fun !! be ready to clear the messsss.
2.lets do onething in your case. first let the feeder of your child understand that your son is a toddler. now tht you are realized that he is late,,try my tips to mom dated 18th sept.there are some tips to make your child eat foods.
but since thats not your concern but it will give you ideas to start feeding your baby lumpier foods. now that he is very much used to pureed foods, we cant obviously stop him all of sudden,,no kids learn that way..
put some overcooked pieces of the food you puree and mash lightly with your hand and see how he accepts that.give him lumps along with the pureed foods that you are offering,,first give mashed lumps,a couple ofthem,,he will find it abit difficult to learn to eat,,give him time to practise eating,go very slow and show happy expression instead of doubting ones when he is looking at you while eating !!
if he is fine with mashed lumps or extremly soft lumps, increase the texture of lumps and start lumpier foods,,and slowly mover further to abit harder texture,
biscuits soaked in milk, toast soaked in milk, bread pieces soaked in milk are best examples of mashed or lumpier snacks.try that..roti might be too thinn for him to learn to eat, however if you are soaking a paratha,,that might help.
also toddler cereals get very soft and lumpy and its not much a concern if baby doesnt chew them, but at the same time, they do try to chew them because of their size & texture,,one more great way to make them learn to eat !!!!
put a very small lump in his mouth,,it should be smooth enough to to dissolve in mouth, without much efforts..make him get interested that way...

sudden lack of int in liquids, or solids,,might be some prelimnry sign of child on way to sickness so keep a close eye on his schedules, bowels, temperatures and diet in whole day...
dont force your child to graduate to finger foods or unmashed foods at the same time,,keep trying !!! you never know when his interest will develop !!!
good luck.
