Bowel and Bladder Movements:hetal need your help pls!!!

Dear Hetal,

I delivered my daughter at 35weeks and 6 days . She was not just premature but had low birth weight - 1.9 kgs . Its now close to 3 months -88 days precisely .. and she has gained weight and is at 4.5 kgs at present .

She has been exclusively on BM - the problem is for the past month and a half - she has been having a lot of trouble passing her potty . in fact there have been days when she hasnt passed potty for 6 days and then i have had to give her a suppossitory . in the last week she passed stool on 30th after a suppository was given and again on the 6th of jan again only after a suppository .

the doc is pretty cool about it .. he says that she will be fine and this is normal .. and he said that if she doesnt pass stool for 6 days or so then i can take the help of the suppository ..

honestly i am not feeling good about this .. she has a lot of gases .. and i have been giving her carmicide for the same ...

her potty is of normal colour and soft .. so its not like hard and constipated .. but she still cant push it out .. i just dont know why ...?

i am really worried .. ..

for the past 2 days she has been trying to push it out but just cant .. its sad to see her struggle so much .. the fact is that this has started just about a month and a half ago .. prior to that she was able to pasas potty on her own ..

pls advise and help ..

Try the massage, try the raisin syrup, try everything you can. Pear juice is good for the bowels.

Sudha,
I wanted to know what you ended up doing to solve the problem with your baby not having bowel movements. Everything you said sounding exactly like what I am going through now. My daughter is 18 days old and when she was in the hospital she was having normal bowel movements when we got her home she had one more on her own and then she stopped. She started to go 2 or 3 days without having a bowel movement so we were instructed to give her a suppossitory. She is not going on her own unless given a suppossitory and this really bothers me. Her potty is also of normal color and is soft but formed and she tries to push also but can' t. I don' t understand why she can' t. I am really worried about this cause is does not seem natural or normal. Her doctor also acts like everything is fine and says that we can give her a suppository every night and that just sounds crazy to me. I am going for a second opinion this week. I am so worried, confused and nervous about all of this. I am open to any advice, help and comments.

about trouble passng motions,,do as your dr recmnds,,,you can try offerng raisin water just make sure to check your baby for rashes,,and also some babies got loose motions,,so go slow2 ! no hurries,,
adin more fibr to your diet, while feeding drink lots of water, or munch something,,offer your baby warm/lukewarm water between feeds like 2tblespoons or so and it will help without ne raisins etc,..
avoid offerng your baby ne home remedy, even though recomnded,,mostly because what your baby is going thru is quite normal until first 3-6months of thr life,,and make sure your baby takes proper feeds,,if your baby is feeding well, her input and outflow will be balanced...
cycling, massage on belly/naval area, tummy time between feeds also helps,,,other thn tht,,offerng gripe water as recmnded (for gas), esp the bonnison also helps in digestion aid,,above all,,for ne such constipatn probs,,avoid going to extreme fibrs at 3-4months esp if the solids are not started,,,when you start solids,,you offer raisins or prunes its a diff issue,,body knows it well how to react to foods when its introduced one,,,otherwise for such an infant,,raisns have proved to be not only ineffective but also have caused rashes and reflux when used...
ayurveda recmnds it,,just make sure to keep an eye on your baby reactions to ne home remedies,,as far as he seems to be acceptng,,no problem !
rest all have gvn good feedbacks, you shouldnt worry !

Hi Sudha,

Dont worry at all!! This is very common!!
My daughter used to do the same until 5 months!! she used to pass stoll every 10-15days..yeah her stool was soft and i was also thinking the same way as u ..we did all tests and everything was normal!! she was on BM too!!
For gases, dont eat any gassy foods like cabbage/bringal/flowers or eat in less amount.

When i started solids for my dd , she was passing stool regularly :) I also introduced spinach soup to her like 2-3 spoons max!

I think just wait for 1 more month and slowly start her some solids like in small amounts but make sure that BM would be her main meal!!

All the best and be relaxed!!

shilpa.

Hi Sudha,

My son turned 4 months old on 1st Jan and he had the same problem from the time he was 1 and half months old till about 2 weeks back. My doc also said that it is natural for the babies to pass bowels once in 5 to 7 days and not worry about it. I used to give him raisin water, however my doc advised against it as it maybe a source of infection (even if we are very careful) and not to take risks. His bowels have regularised now and he passes motion everyday. Please do not worry about it as long as your baby is feeding normally and passing gas and stomach is not bloated.

Cheers
Subha

I totally agree with SP. I think babies need to get upright around this age . I had the same problem with my son but once we put him like that on our legs and let him pass motion , it worked fine. Also try bicycling baby's legs.

I also used the black raisin syrup. Although docs say 6 days is OK , elders and ayurveda recommends daily motion

Hello Sudha! Dont worry as your doc says its normal to pass stool after 6 days. But please try the indian remedies which might help the baby to pass stool earlier then 6 days.Firstly try to only breast feed as bottle feed can give her constipation. Then you should try and eat a lot of spinach and chapati so that the stool comes out soft. Also, get this herbal called vavding and vakumba from the market make powder and add just a pinch in a container of boiling drinking water. After it boils seive it and give 3-4 tablespoon to the baby every day. This will help the baby to pass stool everyday. There is this herbal called baalgoti or somva chotris in market, try to give that and it will help the baby with gas and stool problem. For gas only give bonisan(herbal) or put a paste of hing mixed with water on the navel which should also help.
I have a baby of 3 months and first born.Didnt know anything about it but
got to know all from my mother.

Hope this will help u and the baby

Regards,

Heena

Subject:  Stools

Hello Sudha.
Not to worry. My son is 8 months old now and even he had trouble passing stools when he was in his 3rd month. he used to try and he couldnt get it. what we did was some home remedy. doc said not to give anything, but we used to give him a few spoons of raising water( soak dried raisins in boiled water over nite).
Also when he was trying to pass, i would make him sit on my feet, with his bottom on my feet and space between my feet so that he could pass stools. This used to help him push easily and he would pass stools.

RE:Baby cries while passing urine - Hetal pls advice
At the same time the child is feeling some pain So try to understand and consult a doctor.... - sharmasanvi [View Message]
RE:bowel movement in 2 week old infant
Some babies go through phases when they either can't use the muscles to empty their bowels or they "forget how to". In that case, it's safest keep using the suppositories daily to make them do a dirty in 5 minutes.... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:where can I get laxative?
You can get either glycerin or bisacodyl suppositories in any Indian pharmacy - I recommend saving money by not buying child-size ones, instead cutting adult supps in half to make a child-size dosage.
(I have a daughter with long-term bowel issues: she can't "do" without them!)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:constipation
When the baby is in discomfort from constipation (especially if she hasn't done some dirty for two days or more), the first thing you should give is a glycerin suppository.... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:hi
Most doctors say banana doesn't help - the potassium in it makes constipation worse. Remember you can make your own prune puree in a blender. Grape, grapefruit and papaya are also laxative fruits. And remember you can safely use baby suppositories as often as you need to (they also help with "training" the baby to do a dirty at the same time every day)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:Baby Movements/Development
Consult a good doctor immediately as this should not be ignored as it will cause a big issue if you let it go now, please seek doctors advice on immediate basis.... - Aditi [View Message]
RE:Baby Movements/Development
Hi Karthik this is a serious issue and you should look into this matter very seriously as its concern with your own child and you cannot let things go, have a good consulting done by a good doctor.... - Amaira [View Message]
