Feeding:Hetal, can you please reply to my previous post?

Hi,
Would appreciate any help to my previous post (7303). I would like to add to that message.. I have been told that probably, my milk supply has reduced, so, i tried giving her formula feed during night times.. But, the problem is, she doesn't have properly. she has only 30ml at a time, and sleeps off.. again gets up after 45 mins for another 30ml.. so, mixing formula and giving is even more tiring.. was easier to let her suck on me !

sry guys,,yesturday,,after reading and writing couple post yesday,,i couldnt sit longer to type my answer...so had to logg off.

neways,,
swapna,,at first make sure her intake is as expected by 7-8months old,,
and its not always food that makes baby get up at night..many other things are involved...
most babies needs sucking thn the actual milk feed,,esp if baby is on solids..mostly breastfeed often get used to it..
its advisable that you avoid givng her formula at midnights/or bottle,,instead bf is better option..
if your baby is on solids,,its unlikely that she will get up at night !
check on below:
1. make sure, she takes a good feed...dont overfeed or make her full...when full feeds are offerd and babies sleep,,they feel restless or have a bloaty feel on thr stomach.
after full feeds,,make sure to burp her, or give her a light playtime, or atleast rest her elevated, if she happens to sleep...
a 7month old is expectd to have proper intake of solids and formula/bm as below:

http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=5638&table_name=dis_feeding

expect her wakng up, an increase in feeds mostly on weekly or fortnightly,,its when growth spurts occurs.check the diet charts and make sure thats not the reason of her wakng up.
other reasons check on:
1. proper temperature, 70-75..if heater is on..
2. proper clothing, light dimmd out !
3. give her a warm bath before sleep and it should help.
4. m not sure about 7months old liking massage, but give her a light massage without or with lubircation,,avoid the oil massage,,its not needed ne more..offer massage after bath,,its soothing.
5. make sure her liquid intakes are proper thru out the day and esp the later part of the day.
6. proper diaper,,get the good quality diaper that can take good night wettngs at night,,and see if wetness is not the reason for her wakng up.
7. whenever she wakesup, if she is used to bottle at night,,give warm water in bottle or offer water with dropper and it will keep her mouth wet..most of the times,,,esp in winters when babies get dry mouth is because of heater dry air !
everry morning,,make sure to keep your house cross ventilated...
8. some babies have mild cold that is internal,,see if blocked nose is the reason...keep her nasal passages clean, and give water at night after 7months onwards,,so that she will stop asking at night.
if your baby cries for milk/bm or formula at night,,it means she is hungry..it will be seen when she knows that she is drinking water and not milk,,she might cry ! if so, offer some 2oz milk/formula, by keepng her elevated, or offer milk/formula diluted in water..
most babies apetite and habits are irrespective of food, fluids and ne other health problems and so it happens that even if the baby is quite contended and full with solids,,he will wakeup and ask for feeds ! i started my baby solids at 7.5months,,and until then she was waking up at midnight for feeds/full feeds and until 8-9months she continued doing that,,until she was in full fledge solid diet which was at 9months onwards when we introduced solids with fat, protein and multigrains....and its then most babies get stable,,but we have to keep trying.
make sure your baby does not remain hungry thru out the night,,if you think she has taken full feeds and proper feeds as per her age, which i have mentioned above,,thn offerng water is better alternative,,but rspect her night feeds, during growth spurts and make sure that she is hungry,,and not just wants to suck,or if water doesnt seem to work..

SP, your baby is of same age,,all of the above will apply for you too.please note that solids could be the reason but it has lot to do with other factors and make sure that if thats not the reason,,..

Shalini,,if your bm supply is next to null, thn the water trick will work for you..and if you are havng good bm supply,,offerng a good feed/full feed(dont overfeed),,some 30mins before his sleepng time might help.
if you cant afford to spend time for bath, massage and all,,atleast wipe him off, keep your baby fresh, make him wear atleast good night clothes,,that will cover his body all over and ensure proper hygine..i know its tiring while working and taking care of kids,,but then you deserve a good night sleep,,right.

other reasons,,make sure your baby is not feelng bloaty, gassy, or colicky,,,and that her bowels etc are all normal/routine.

we all human beings, so dont feel that you are not a perfect mom,,,time is the only thing that you cant stretch more thn 24hour a day,,,i surely hope it was possible,,so its obvious that 24hours,,does nt seem to be just enough for us...esp with babies !

take care all of you,,

swapna, just check if he is not sufferng from ne gas problems,,,and after taking a good feed of 4 scoops of cerelac mixed with banana,,,prob thats what is causing him take less formula !
dont force him,,respect his apetite.

can you try reducing the 8pm feed of solid and see if drinks formula well !
also check the 7-8months old diet charts and see if it helps you.
let me know, take care.

Thankyou very much for the detailed reply.
The problem is not just the waking up part.. It is that she is not drinking 'full feeds'. She feels hungry and gets up, but, goes to sleeps as soon as she has 20-30 ml (1 oz).. then, gets up again after some time.. I am not sure how to make her drink around 150 ml.. and sleep through out the night.
Anyway, i will just wait for her to grow up older.. Managing work, baby and sleep is tough.. But, I guess it's a part of being a mom !

i know Hetal would be best to suggest in situation like this and even I need her thoughts ...
but since i saw that u misunderstood the suggestion, m writing it out ..

i guess the suggestion was to feed the baby full with bottle/BM before sleep (whatever time u sleep say 10 pm) ...

seems there is a big gap between the last good feed ur baby is getting in evening and first full feed in morning.

So ur baby is staying hungry and asking feed again and again. Dont give formula at midle of nights ... BM is best when baby wakes up at nights ... and formula at nights anyway has fear of mouth infections ... plus its a trouble to make bottles at night ..

lets wait for Hetal's reply ...
